was down there on the 28th of sept water is real low but if you can find the honey holes its all good seems the fish are all gathered up in those holes was using nightcrawlers on a slip float 3-4 feet caught at least 50 smallies in 6 hours average12-18 inches with a couple nice largemouths not bad for the water conditions was wading in shorts and water was a lil chilly temp was 84 F

at elkhorn campground you need to get a parking pass at office its 2 bucks go under bridge going downstream bout quater mile look for a rocky wall on right its big you ll see it fish there avg depth ranges i guess between 6-12 feet was wading an never went over my shorts great place to fish one of the best in my opinion good luck give me sum feed back if you go is on 460 east might be west dependin on which way you coming from my way was from 64 east i believe its exit 58 off 64 east

I just got back from the CR and thanks for all the help men! Elkhorn is my honey hole! I could go down there with an empty hook and catch a fish. Went there three days ago and caught 8 smallies!!!! It's a everyday thing here I just like to try new ground.

Are yall using circle hooks on those crawlers? It helps minimize gut-hooking and killing fish. Practicing catch and release on the smallies, I hope?

i never use circle hooks unless kids are fishin with me or im catfishing ?do you even like circle hooks its the lazy way to fish if you ask me !!

It's not about being lazy at all. It's about trying not to gut hook and minimize the number of smallies that I'd kill unnecessarily. A smallmouth is more prone to inhaling live bait. They'll crunch it, then slurp it down. The circle hook is at least more apt to rotate back out to the fish's lip and a big hookset is not necessary. As a bonus, a fish is more apt to not come unbuttoned on you too.

So yes, if I was going to fish smallies with live bait, you can bet that I'd be using circle hooks. I practice catch and release on all creek smallmouth, so I'm concerned with not killing fish. I want the population of fish to stay strong so that we can enjoy fishing them for years down the road. Even if I didn't practice catch and release, on the main stem of Elkhorn you have the slot limit to contend with...those 12-16" fish must be released...so why not minimize the number of incidental kills? (Especially if you're going to post directions out here on the world wide web to your honey hole.)

Not trying to disrespect you brother, just don't want to read a post in a couple of years where you are wondering why you aren't catching as many fish in your honey hole as you did years past...

One thing I will say, you keep giving exact locations on the intranet and your honey holes will be gone. The meathogs will send you a thankyou note in the mail.

Dude, ole shadrap and splitshot know what happens on that creek and they are trying to protect a very fragile resource. It sounds like you are keeping fish and telling others how to do it also, maybe you aren't but it does have that tone. The creek is fragile buddy you need to respect and protect.
