I've always heard it was against the law to have a bass captive. Keeping one in a tank also will stunt it's growth because of the size of any tank. I've seen stunted bass in a pond before, not pretty.
A stunted fish would be long and skinny result of a poorly managed pond. I think an aquarium fish, if healthy, would be short and fat since there would be no shortage of food.
if bass pro can do it then why cant anyone else? .. and yes it does stunt there growth, but goldfish get stunted too, no one seems to care about that.
As far as Bass Pro goes I believe they have a permit to keep Bass in tanks along with the other fish they have. Gold fish are supposed to be tropical fish meant for a tank.
well i dont think any fish was meant to be in a tank. you may be right about the permit but im not sure, ive never heard anything one way or the other. but we are raising tilapia in my agriculture science class soon, ill ask if we have a permit to do so.
If you have a seine or a trap for minnows you can usually catch some bass minnows in the spring through summer where you know there are bass.I catch a lot of fingerlings in my trap and I just throw them back. Traps catch a good amount of bait and cost around $8.00
If it's 12 inches I'm pretty sure you can do what you want with it. And if you buy fingerlings, It should be the same as buying a turkey from a hatchery. You can't catch em but you can buy em
I have a smallmouth bass that was caught from a private pond and was 5 inches at capture. He has grown to 13 inches in 2 years of night crawlers, bluegill, and fatheads. He is in a 50 gallon tank. His name is Charlie and he is the meanest fish you have ever seen. He will take food out of your hand, but you better be careful. He was originally put in the tank with some other bluegill, green sunfish, and minnows. He ate every one of them. My kids are scared of him.
I can't see how raising a fish from a private pond would be illegal, but if it is I guess I am in violation. I plan on growing him up a bit more and releasing him this spring in my little pond.
If you read the fishing guide, it tells you. If you catch a legal size bass, you can keep it and do what you want with it. Including keeping it alive and feeding it. Goes the same if you catch a minnow - since catching minnows and using them as bait (killing them) is legal if you have a fishing lic. You CAN NOT release them back into public waters tho (unless its from the same place you got them out of). However, Cbass - what you did is illegal, since it was not legal size when you took it. But, I don't care if you don't![]()
