    Re: Have We Gone Nutz?

It is funny about people wanting the ten commandments and prayer in school are the same families that pray on a regular basis and have the ten commandments posted within thier own house. Do you feel they will forget this during the 6 hours of public education?

There are so many different religions represented in any public school system, as well as so many secular differences within the christian religion that is also represented within the school system, that any set type of prayer will leave someone out, or expect someone to do something different than their family feel is right.

As a teacher I leave all religion and politics out of the classroom. Except during the holidays, where I teach a religions of the world and religious celebrations unit. As part of that I put up a small christmas tree, as well as a well as a Menorah, but we also discuss celebrations and holidays of the islamic, hindu, and buddhist faith. This is part of our core content of Cultural Celebrations are a source of artistic creation (Arts and Humanities) as well as cultural beliefs have shaped society throughout history (Social Studies).

If you feel that feel that your child needs to follow any religion, it is not my place as a teacher to do that - that falls into the family values category, and families should be responsible for instilling those values. I would never make your child say a prayer from a different faith - you should not expect me to force your faith on other children with different views.

"It just rubs me the wrong way how the country has become so sensitive to other cultures and so quick to dismiss this great country's heritage..."

You mean like the way we tend to forget that people were in the US for some 15,000 years before some white guy got lost and "discovered" the new world.

Yep exactly like that. But they lost and when that happens you have to adapt to the ways of the people who won. But now that you mention it there ever was another culture that has earned a right to demand some changes I would agree it would be them. I'm not real familiar with their beliefs.
I know they have tried to change alot of football names like the Redskins and Florida State Seminoles, Braves and so on but they lost that battle as well.
Now we could take this a step further and talk about the Rebel flag but that's really walking that tight rope of political correctness. Good to see you on here again Andrew.

You see thats the problem, other cultures can worship where and when they want or change how others worship why can't the Christians in the United States of America do the same? We cannot because that small percentage of students get their precious feelings hurt. How is that right? In this country my opinion is that we say prayers to God. If you don't like it shut up and take it the prayer lasts less than a minute. I'm sorry I don't agree with you on this one Col, and I'm doing my best not to be insulting to you and your fellow teachers because I'm certain alot of teachers don't agree with this public education mandate. A HUGE part of our decision to put our daughter in a Christian school was based on this. The public schools can do what they want and I'm thankful that I don't have to fight that nonsense. Taking God out of the public schools was a big mistake. hagd.

Yep it sure was. A guy wrote a book about all the bad things that happened once prayer was taken out of school. There were nineteen (if I can remember correctly from my college days) negative things that went up once prayer was taken out. Little things like the drop out rate, teen pregnancy, teen drug and alcohol use, the teen smoking rate.

Those are no big deal it is just job security for me lol.

The ten commandments should be obeyed by everyone. It doesn't matter what religion you are. Take the label of religion off of the ten commandments and call them "ten laws to live by in a moral society". If everyone obeyed these ten laws the country would be a whole lot better. Just because a good idea is made by one religious group doesn't make it a bad idea!

Tyson foods is one, and several meat placking plants are also having these problems. Yo Igor, why not import them. As long as they have to pay taxes the same as me, I say let them suffer with the bad economy, let them have 30% or more of their pay come to our government programs and defense spending, and lets let them pay the high gas prices we deal with. Yep, let's let them see what it's really like to be an American, but let's make darn sure they have to care the same burdens we do when we salute the flag.
