Had a Ranger that had that happen had to replace the steering cables. Hope this will help you out. You can do it your self not that hard I did mine myself.

I apologize if this is posted in the wrong place.
I was wondering if any of you guys out there might have an idea on what could make my boat ridiculously hard to steer ? It's nearly impossible to turn at idle speed.
It's a 1993 Sprint with a 1990 Mercury Black Max 150
Thanks in advance.

do you have a jack plate? I got my sprint a little less than a year ago and they guy that owned it before me had the it raised so high I could barely steer it. Lowered the motor and can drive it with one finger (although that is not suggested![]()
2003 Stratos had to replace the steering cables, could also be your steering box (rack and pinion) It took two hands to turn the thing no matter how fast.
If you plan on keeping the boat, change it over to Hydraulic Steering!!!

Thanks for the replies.....and YES Pastorbass, it does have a jack plate, Im a newbie to this kind of thing, so let me ask--what would/could it hurt to lower the jack plate ?
Thanks.
the only thing i know of that will change with lowering the jackplate is performance, but, if its too high, it might perform better after you lower it....
Sounds like steering cables to me!
It won't hurt anything, as mentioned before it changes performance. Once you get your steering problem figured out you may want to toy with the jackplate some until you get it setup best for you. Mine was way to high, now I think it is just a little too low.
I to am new but would think it should turn just as easy in the water as out. So if it was the jack which raise the motorout of the water which could make it hard to steer. Or are you saying that the plate it self is interfearing with the turning?
