Thanks for the replies.....and YES Pastorbass, it does have a jack plate, Im a newbie to this kind of thing, so let me ask--what would/could it hurt to lower the jack plate ?

It won't hurt anything, as mentioned before it changes performance. Once you get your steering problem figured out you may want to toy with the jackplate some until you get it setup best for you. Mine was way to high, now I think it is just a little too low.
