x96 versus the x135 is there that much of a difference besides the watts or peak to peak power.

Resolution. The 135 is a 480X480 unit, where the X96 is only 320X320.

There is a huge difference in display and detail between 480 and 320. Both are good though - I used to have an x96, and it was fine. The x135 is much better at picking up stuff on the bottom. I think you could get by with the 96, but wouldn't be disapointed with the 135. I would suggest saving your money for one with color - it really is a world of difference. Lowrance is coming out with a new line of sonar's in the spring, and I would bet that many of the current models will be upgraded, or they just do away with some models all together. When that happens, you can get good closeout prices, and rebates will start flying out for discontinued ones. If possible I would wait a couple of months and save some money.
