i made a rod holder that holds 4 rods and goes on the back deck. i use creek minnows with a BB sinker or two about 2 or 3 feet above it. i use the trolling motor to drag them behind the boat around points, down bluff walls or along breaks until i find them.

I use 6lb. florocarbon on a spinning outfit. I use a #1 octopus circle hook and a single splitshot about 12' to 18' above the hook. Lots of fun catching spunky smallmouth and Ky's on light line.

2 common methods, if you drift your bait a #3/0 1214 eagle claw wire hook, with wire it will straighten, most times and a hang up the hook straightens and your back in bussiness, 18 inches above hook, the size split shot here dictates your sucess more than the other info, hook the bait through the nose, you need a small piece of elastic/rubber on the hook first to keep the bait from fouling. spinning rod in the holder bail open

if u pull up on the bank most of the above hook the bait under the dorsal fin. 18 inches above, place a swivel then a barrel sinker
dont let the hook mentioned above stop u we bought them by the thousands years ago find a good 3/0 wire hook for big shinners we have here,,

    hook setting another chapter lol

    Couple thoughts on the sinker...

    1. I don't use one if I can get away with it. Unless it's really windy or I'm fishing water that's fairly deep, I prefer to fish without one. You'll be surprised how much more action your shiner will have.

    2. When I do, instead of a splitshot I use a clamshell sinker. The smooth sides are much less prone to hang up. Available at BPS.

    Re: Shiner Fishing for bass

I like fishing creek chubs (not sure the difference in those and shiners) but all do is rig them up on a slip float of somekind with a 1/8 split shot and a #3/0 hook then toss them into the same areas I would flip a jig or worm into....have had some folks with me that are crappie or bluegill fishermen and they seemed to enjoy doing this....the mortality rate of the chubs is quite high but I trap them locally so the cost isn't much.

    Re: Shiner Fishing for bass

I use 1/4 oz split shot and 6-8lb flourocarbon on spinning rods. the hooks I use are 2/0 gold aberdeen hooks with large shiners. The splitshot does catch the bottom, but it usually pops off of the what it catches on the bottom. I believe that it gives it a little more action. I do go through quite a few hooks and sinkers but I do love how it pops off the bottom. I do keep one with a slip bobber wet also. Just sit back and troll with the trolling motor. If I get a bunch of bites, I'll stop and tie offor anchor the boat and free line the rigs.
