    Question Auto bail out

Hey its ONLY 25 billion. So if we let them go under, how much will it save the american taxpayer? About 85 bucks a person. So the UAW workers will be covered under ERISA Cost to the tax payer about 25 bucks. Cost to states for unemployment insurance, another 10 bucks. But now we have car dealers. About 200, 000 dealers and emplyees, vacant buildings off the tax roles, fewer folks paying into my social security. And it will much easier to shop for autos with only 5 choices to make, and who will set the costs for autos? And what if overseasauto makers decide they will only finance car loans? Cant happen?Wanna bet? The financial bail out works fine, no money is being lent out, exec bonuses are being paid, most cuts to middle managers. Homes still being forclosed. i'm glad. i was so happy to hear about that 85 I now have been saved from paying.OOOOPs. Just opened my insurance benefits package, deduction went up, drug coverage went up, and now its only saving me about 15 bucks, But its great about letting the auto makers go under, the price of a chinese humvee will go down[if they make them], we can buy our armour off germany or russia, if they want to sell it to us.I'm glad congress is trying to cut costs, what about capping congessional pensions, and medical benefits, how much does that cost us?

Now I'm really kicking myself! In a patriotic ferver, I bought an american truck, made in ohio, and with these lower gas prices just got back from a 1200 mile trip in four daysWhat if next year it breaks down? Where will I get afordable parts, and how many months will I need to wait for an appointment to get a dealer to repair it?What if toyota or honda decide not to make american parts? Just thought about sticking my head in the oven, but its electric, not only would it just give me a bad headache, its electric, and my rates went up almost 25%.Got to check my insurance to see if cranial injureess are coverd.Gee if I knew I was going to have so many problems in my old age, I would have never cut back on the drinking!

    Re: Auto bail out

Well congress better wake up and smell the coffee, cause if just (1) American Auto Maker goes under, it'll cost the USA 2.5 million lost jobs nation wide....Yes I'm correct, that's how many people it takes to build the American made Auto's from start to finish. from the guy will builds the light bulbs that go in the dash board...to the guy who builds the tires that go on the vehicles...to the guy who does the test drive to make sure the vehicle is up to par for the public to buy.....

The bailout isn't just about the UAW workers in the actual Auto Makers Plants...it's about everyone involved in making the Auto's....

    Re: Auto bail out

I'm not an expert on this latest debacle but I have a few questions.
    1) I thought Toyota had pushed into the big three years ago, who's out?
    2) Why isn't Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Hyundai, BMW, Mercedes about to go bankrupt? Maybe they are?
    3) What has been the UAW's impact on the present state of affairs? Bad I assume.
    4) I thought if these companies file for chapter 11 they still produce, sell, service and basically stay open while they restructure?
    5) Why believe anything the guys and gals in Congress say? What happened to having a handle on the Mortgage meltdown? They are still figuring that one out.
Just curious....but who's next? The ship builders Union? The blacktop pavers of america union? The kroger meat packers union? (made these unions up)
I'm very pesimistic about HUGE corporations saying they need help. Especially ones like the Automakers who have had their way with the american people for how many years? These corps are corrupt like the gubment in fact I would say they are in bed with several of the people in congress. If they get help then there should be no bonus to any member of management until the money is paid back, NONE! Cut their daggone pay and figure out a way to get the union stronghold off their back.

    Re: Auto bail out

To add to what DJD said, IF we give them the bail out, what assurances do we have that they'll do something different? A big part of the reason that the "big 3" are in such dire straights is that they've miss-managed the companies for years. I certainly would not be willing to give ANY bail out money if it was going to be business as usual. What changes do they plan to make IF they get bail out money?

btw, I thought the US was a capitalist society. Isn't a bail out socialist?

The government of japan, and germany both helped those car companys. They also have government paid health insurance. And before all this FREE? trade, they taxed the hell out of american cars sold there.Yeah let congress deny the bail out, all of them will still be getting paid, and their benefits will still be tax payer funded. Its the same ole same ole, give to finance, oil, and farmers, and screw most everybody else. And let the government run part of the auto industry? The government that several years sold siezed autos and boats and houses from drug dealers and LOST money,. that government? The government that was doing so well for all those 6 years, and let the democrats ruin the whole country in two years? wait thje dems only controlled one third, the senate was republican yet .

Let'em go under to hell with'em. This crap has to stop NOW. These top Ceo's bigwig crooks and the Unions are killing this country pure and simple. The UAW has killed the American automobile industry with their insane pay scales, benifit packages, paying people 90% of their pay while they are off for weeks on end, it's freaking nuts. Accountability has to start somewhere guys and it needs to start now.
Nothing and I mean nothing will change if we throw money at these idiots, except as follows.
The top white collar of the companies mentioned will stillmake millions and be flown around in their private jets. And continue to get million dollar bonuses while the compangoes belly up.
The UAW will still run roughshot over everybody and make sure their insane agenda's are met while the compnay goes bankrupt.
Nothing at all will change as the company will stay structured the was it always has because that's the way it is and they aren't willing to change their ways.
This country is meeting it's maker because of one thing people GREED, GREED, and more GREED, and until that is brought to a screaching halt by somebody who has a set nothing will be different.
Throwing good money at bad never works with the same management at work doing the same STUPID practices they always do.
I say let sink and let God sort'em out, it's the only way these money grubbing, seedy, greed intoxicated idiots will ever learn.

Guess who had the majority of the Labor Unions support? Barry! Wonder how that will work....hhmmmm.
You know I heard that one of the companies that is under this last bailout package gave Billions not Millions, Billions of dollars in bonus money last year! You know dang well they were hurting then but said too bad we want our money.
I'm with you Mark, I'm tired of the handouts (I never get any) make these morons accountable and let some new blood move in who would prolly work harder for less money.
GM, Ford, and Chrysler have been getting their clock cleaned for years by other manufactures. (jmo)

It is less about mis-management, and MORE about UNIONS totally SCREWING corporate America.

    Unions DESTROYED our automotive industry...........
Unions DESTROYED our air lines industry..........
Unions DESTROYED our small electronics industry
    Unions DESTROYED our appliance industry
    Unions DESTROYED....................etc, etc, etc.

Maybe, YEARS back unions were needed.....

BUT I say in todays competitive, GLOBAL market we need to compete. AND paying someone 70K a year to push a broom, while GIVING them health insurance and GIVING them a pension, and GIVING them bla, bla, bla.......is NOT competitive......

Look, I'm in an industry where my SKILLS determine if I have a job or not.......NOT some FAT lazy SLOB union negotiator.........AND I have to compete with Indian, Russian, and Chinese developers and Technical STAFF that come out of school infinitely better prepared than I EVER was.....but I continue to sharpen my skills........

We need to become competitive PERIOD............

Yet with all these TAXES, the best selling vehicle in China is NOT a Toyota, NOT a Hyundai, Not a Mazda...........it is a GM vehicle......IMAGINE THAT.

It sells BETTER there, because it is MADE THERE, and they have no UNIONS.

Get rid of the UNIONS, pay a CORRECT WAGE, and the automakers will start selling their vehicles HERE.

We CANNOT compete with labor costs.

AND DON'T THINK we don't already subsidize the auto industry.....WE DO, but most of it is hidden.

AND with regards to taxes.........in the Late 70's and early 80's, the foreign SMALL cars were beating the HELL out of us on price, so our government, decided to TAX the CRAP out of foreign imports.......They were trying to make our vehicles more competitive, by ARTIFICALLY inflating the price of foreign vehicles..........SO, in their INFINITE WISDOM, what did the big 3 do................of COURSE........they raised the price of their vehicles 20 percent.......BRILLIANT.

    Re: Auto bail out

My dad always told me: "Boy you got yourself in this mess now you can get yourself out."

I will continue supporting GM as I have done all of my adult life, at least until I am forced to make another choice, but not with any handouts, bailouts, "loans", or whatever else the Big 3 are now referring to it as. And then I heard they (U.A.W.) have the gall to say if the government goes on vacation without addressing the issue then the government will be to blame for the consequences????? What the heck?????
