Hey fellas i was reading an article and it struck my attention, does all phytoplankton die when the winter hits or does some of it still live beneath the water in warmer water if sunlight penetration can reach it even though the temps are cold? Because in the summer months plankton could be anywhere on the lake and blown with the wind, right??? Also the tiny zooplankton that eat the phytoplankton, where do they come from? I know phytoplankton uses photosynhthesis to grow and get energy but do zooplankton reproduce or muliply by themselves? Or do they hibernate in mud or something when the plankton die out then come back? It made me start thinking about the food chain and bass. Anyway don't ask me why i was thinking about this, because i didn't pay much attention in biology class. So thats it i know some of you guys are sharp when it comes to this kind of stuff......later.....I've already got cabin fever!
Here is a link that may answer some of your questions....there are lot of different types of phytoplankton and zooplankton. Bottom line to your question though is: Don't expect a phytoplanton bloom in the winter unless the water in the area is warmed up artificially like around a power plant.
