Winter fishing Cumberland River

Just wandering if anyone fishes the Cumberland River at Wolf Creek Dam in the winter time? Is it possible to put my canoe in this time of year at the dam? I just didn't want to look like an idiot if I go around Christmas time. Will the trout bite in the winter time? Still new to fishing and trying to learn all i can as fast as i can. Never been trout fishing and looking forward to learning how.

Going tomorrow we'll give you full update...we've gone when it's been 15 degrees and caught fish. I look stupid on good days might as well look stupid on the bad ones too...

BE PREPAIRD opps for lots of color, when I crossed it this morning at Bville its rising, and too much color to fish today, down by traces it was still shallow and visable riffle

Water is up and not wade-able. 4000 cfs is not bad for a boat, but not good for a canoe in the wintertime. Be careful in a canoe down there. When water is low, there are rocks and stuff just under the surface. I ran a canoe up on one down there in the summertime. Dang near turned it over. You can catch fish down there in the wintertime, but it is slower. Water is substantially colder and insect activity is less. I recommend wading once the generation stops if you want to go in the wintertime.

Winter time is the time to fish the C-River. During this time you have a greater chance of catching the trout of a lifetime! If you are fly-fishing, use nymphs several feet under a strike indicator. If spin fishing, use lures and work them erratically, this can trigger some large bites from big browns...so be ready! I was there on Mon and Tues, and the river was low and wadeable. I bet with all the rain we've had lately, they will start to generate for a while. Wait for the rains to cease, and they will cut off the generators again. Good Luck!

Went yesterday and for the first time in 6 years of fishing the CR I was blanked...and that's saying alot because I fish it often. I can't blame the fish for not wanting to come to the surface. It was 32 degrees and 100% chance of rain where we were all day. It was a miserable day. But we had the river to ourselves!

We threw everything at them...and didn't even get a look.

If you are going in a canoe make sure you are wearing waders because if the water is low you will have to get out and push your boat down river. The bite is a little slower, but when it's a nice day even if it's cold they will bite.

Blanked on the CR...wow! That's hard to do! You do definetly need to pick your fair weather days while fishing the CR in the winter. Although, I have had some amazing days during nasty weather...usually as long as the wind isn't blowing to hard. It seems when the wind is blowing hard at the CR, the fishing *****! Sorry to hear that about your trip. I'm sure you'll tear them up next time! Later.
