Avid largemouth angler looking for some advice on smallmouth fishing at cumberland. Fishing buddy and I are heading down in a couple of weeks to get the itch out (is it spring yet?) and need some help on if one area may be better than another. Were going to try tubes and 3" curly tail mister twisters.....any suggestions?
Thanks

I don't fish Cumberland for Smallies but if I did then I would throw a jig if that is your cup of tea. Me, I would head on about 30 miles south and fish Dale if you are targeting Smallies. They are hitting pretty good now and should be doing so for the next couple of weeks. FNF is my choice but that is just me, jig would be by second choice if I could ever put down the fly. Good Luck and hope somebody that fishes Cumberland regularly will chime in with some more help for you if you are dead set on the Big C. By the way welcome to the board. A lot of good fellas on this site that will help all they can.

Hey Zimmy,
Like Elnut, I was biten by the FNF bug over 10 years ago. In two weeks they shouldb e really hot on the FNF but I've also had luck with crankbaits (hotlips and wiggle warts) and jigs (black/blue or pumpkin seed/green pumpkin or cumberland craw/green pumpkin). Fish are usually around points with deeper water nearby. I usually fish in the major creek arms and fish main and secondary points until I get a pattern. Hope this helps Zimmy and I'l keep you posted as I usually go at least once a week. By the way, a friend of mine had 5 smallies over 18 in at Cumberland last Wednesday on the FNF.
good luck and hope this helps,
bassmaster
AGREE with bassmaster about the FnF, also the jigs, I also like to fish a jerk bait on points(I fish it slower than most people) usually fish about 3 x a week out of Jamestown. Good luck Don (Shinerman)
Don't be hesitant to throw some topwaters at them. Spooks or Sammies can produce throughout the day this time of year. If you start getting a good chop on the water, you might switch over to a Pop-R or a Devil's Horse. Stick with natural colors in clear water. Definitely throw topwaters at any surface action you see. You just might get a BIG surprise. On my last trip down there, we chased a couple of balls of shad into the back of Stillhouse Hollow. On one cast, I had a striper just annihilate my 100 series Sammy and start pulling drag immediately. My drag was set appropriately for 15 pound line, but before I could reach down and loosen the drag a little, I was broken off. I have been fishing Cumberland for over 10 years and this was by far the most violent strike I have ever witnessed. 20 minutes afterward, I was still shaking like a dog *****ing razor blades! That was the last Sammy I had, but it was well worth the cost to have the memory and the story to tell.
thanks for the advice!
