Fish Hard
oh and since i'm asking what you use how you hooking them?
for creek minnows i use an eagle claw #2 kahle hook. for shiners i go up a size either #1 or 1/0. dont go to big, because you want the minnow to be able to swim around. i hook'em thru the lips.
I've caught ,as well as some others on this board (Hello PhoeniX), lots of smallmouths on Dale Hollow with all different size hooks down there throat, . I have caught a few with more than 1 hook inside .If there hungry it may not matter how big , use common sense , but to small of a hook and you may or may not connect. I mostly use #1 or #2 gamakatsu circle hook, drop shot hook .

How ya been?
Whatever hook you use, please set the hook in a timely manner. So far in only 7 days on the water this winter at Dale we have caught 3 different fish that had hooks in their gullets so far that only the eye of the hook could barely be seen. Steve Headrick at the One Stop said he has seen and heard of more and more of these fish being caught. If you use a Circle Hook, don't think for one second that it only hooks the fish in the corner of the mouth because this is not true. I did shiner fish when I first started fishing back in 2003 but have not since but I do know the rule of thumb for most of the guides at Dale that shiner fish is the 3 second rule. 3 seconds is the most you let the fish run before setting the hook. These fish will swallow the shiner and with the quality of fish getting bigger and bigger at Dale every year, the chances of the fish swallowing a shiner are even more. Just set the hook in a timely manner and to help us keep the great Smallie resources at Dale, Cumberland, Green, Laurel or any other lake you fish with shiners.

Id be the first to commend those three fisherman you caught fish behind for cutting the line instead of removing the hook, bet you enjoyed catching those 3, sounds like they knew what they were doingWhatever hook you use, please set the hook in a timely manner.
