Re: Falls of The Ohio Fishing

went today and the skunk smell is stronger than ever.LOL!!! i had one bite on a minnow under a sip bobber in the mouth of colgate creek and that was it. if the water would clear up i think the fishing would improve 100%. going back tomorrow maybe the little rain we are getting will help clear it up. i have been there this time of year with muddy water and when it started raining you could actually watch it clear up.

Would I be ok there with 25lbs test mono or should I beef it up? Do the cats and stripers respond better to cut bait or live shiners or what?

If you are going to fish live bait the live Shad can't be beat on the river. When we cast for stripes down there I use 14 to 15lb test and do just fine with it. DO not use anything less than 40 to 50lb test down there for the cats or you WILL eventually get your heart broke, lol.

25lb tst is fine 4 stripers, but go for the 30-50lb test for the cats, because from my experience from this.

I was fishing with 20lb test and was catching them left and right and I was like man im set with this 20lb line, it's working great, and it was until...
I had my pole pinned between 2 logs and my pole went "SWOOSH" and then i looked over and heard the nastiest "SNAP" in all of my fishing years.
Thats when I converted to my 30+lb test, and i've got 65lb test on my Ambassaduer..

For the hybrids/stripe I like to use the lightest line as possible so i can cast as far as possible. Sometime an extra 20ft on cast can mean the difference between catching fish and fishing.

I go as light as 8lb and rarely over 12lb, I use the heavier line for when Im tossing giant swim baits.

Fighting a 12lb hybrid in white water on 8lb line puts a tickle in my pickle everytime!

    Magic bait?! Whats that? haha

I usually use those Storm living eye or what ever they are called swim baits. I use them up to the 5" size. You can slingem a mile and the big boys cant resist a large bait like that.

Ive been down there before shoulder to shoulder with people and catching fish just cause I could sling my bait out a bit further. Sometimes people get frustrated when you have a fish on and start near the locks and end up at the interpretive center to land a fish and the whole time you are going over and under other peoples lines. But hey, Ive spent many hours fishing the piers in the Gulf during the cobia run and if you can manage the angry mobs down there you can manage the friendly folk at the river!

With this talk about light line, does KY or IN recognize line class records? Now that I got a boat, it may be fun to see what kind of fish you can get on some serious light line! I know the world record hybrid caught in arkansas was by a crappie fisherman with a 4lb outfit so it it can be done!
