    Gander mtn

Among my xmas presents was a gift card to that store.Since we had an appointment with a doctor in bowling green last week, used it, after looking around, finally bought a few things, most of it wasn't really needed. had a balance of1.89. the cashier said it would be credited to my next purchase! I live 65 miles from that store, They know because trhey ask for zip codes.I said it isn't worth the hassle to remember the balance, and I will send the gift card back, along with the credit card i got when that store first opened. They are over priced, under stocked, and why pay tax when I can save even the shipping charges at PBS, or Cabelas?

    Angry Re: Gander mtn

I stopped at the Gander Mt store in Bowling Green on a return trip from Nashville. I found a catfish rod that looked pretty good and decided to buy it.

At the check out the young, attractive, female cashier tried to charge me twice as it was a 2-piece rod and I handed it to her broken down. I didn't want to carry a 7 foot rod around the store.

I politely informed her that it was $19.99 for the ROD, not each piece. Her reply was, well I guess you got a good deal today cause I'll only charge you $19.99. That was all it took for this old pharte to inform her to immediatly call her manager to the register.

I did not like this young lady trying to accuse me of "stealing" from her store. The manager did indeed confirm that a fishing rod is sold by the rod, not a price for each piece.

I then informed the manager that I was no longer interested in buying ANYTHING from this store and left the rod at the checkout and departed the store.

That may sound like I'm quick to be angry and a nasty SOB to deal with. I worked with the public for over 30 years and am well aware of how customer service should be given. This cashier ACCUSED me in no uncertain terms that she thought I was a crook. I didn't get irate or cuss her or disrespect her in any way. I just wanted her to know the correct price on the rod and didn't need any smart reply from her.

You're right. Gander Mt is overpriced and more of an elitist sporting goods store.

For various reasons over the years I refused to patronize certain stores. K-Mart, Service Merchandise and various banks. Guess what? They are all now bankrupt or in Chapter 11

Yeah I had high hopes for them when I heard they were coming to BG but have been somewhat disappointed with what they have to offer so far. They did have some good deals going on around Christmas but like you said, the selection just isn't there.

From what I've seen I'm not sure thet'll be around much longer if business dosen't pick up.

Off topic but another place I couldn't wait to get in BG was The Catfish House resturant. My stomach and tastebuds still haven't forgiven me for that.

I have gotten Gander MT. catalogs for years just to compare prices and yes they are way high. But I'll tell you many years ago when I got an IGFA record everybody sent me free everything and catalogs. Orvis is by far the most over priced catalog I have ever seen. I'm sure there products or very good but dang if I'm paying 1200$ for a fly rod...and no reel. Just my 2cents

Don, it was 80# Flathead on 12# test. I have the artical out of the paper and one day I'll learn how to post it. The record didn't last long though. Some body landed one in TX. out of a boat that was 91# . Mine was on the shore....and out of the river, he caught one of them sissy lake fish.LOL...Chuck

Spent lots of money at GM here in Bowling Green. Their pricing is on the high side, but I love having the place 3 miles from my house. When they do decide to put something on sale, the pricing is good, not just a false markdown. Never had a problem with the service, and they let our fishing club use their meeting room every month gratis. I hope they stay in business.

Riverrat, you sure catch some dang hawg legs brother. Don't think you could land an 80 lb flathead on a flyrod, even a $1200 one. Pretty cool being in the record books...

Tyme, I think I know the girl you're talking about. She hit on me bad, threw herself at me right at the checkout. Practically a scene out of one of the old Hai Karate commercials. (It was a little embarrassing but you get used to that sort of thing after a while.) She must have something against you 'older' guys.

Pontooner, you'll have to buy me a chilled libation sometime here in the Green. Heck, we may even know each other, though I doubt we hung out together at an Obama for President rally. I agree on the Catfish House, went there when it first opened. Bad move. They need to take some lessons from the 'Top of the River' restaurant down in Gadsden, Alabama. Now them folks know how to run a catfish house.

I kinda doubt I know you since I don't know many old people but seriously I don't live in BG just claim it since most people know where it is. I actually live in southern Edmonson County about 17 miles from BG but I have a BG address. I make it to BG about once or twice a week and if Obama ever does anything you like/approve of maybe we could celebrate.

Oh yeah, I made the mistake of giving the Catfish House a second chance. Bad idea.

Don, the Curious Journal did a nice piece on that fish. Chuck had an audience that day watch him catch that fish I wish I could have been there. Try to imagine landing 80lb blue in that curent with 12lb test, spinning reel and a Sauger jig. He had to wade out and get it after about a 45 minute battle, but he won. Luck involved sure, but also one of the finest epic battle of whipping a fish that a personally know of. Wasn't trying to steal your thunder Chuck but you down play it sometimes being humble. Don it's the beast in his avatar. Way more impressive that that 90 plus on 10lb Stren in my opinion. It's still number two all time with that line class though.

Jim I am confused you said the girl at GM "hit" on you, phsyically or you know "sexually". If she hit on you physically then could she not be charged with "elder abuse" but if she hit on you the other way then she should be charged with public intoxication or was she just blind.
