SKILL
no seriously I think it is the skirt not to big or to small to match the forage.
That's a loaded question dude. What are you trying to do with it? Sometimes small jigs are the best, sometimes huge jigs, Sometimes normal sized. Yeah I know I'm reading into it to much but there's to many options.
Shawn thanks for the reply.
Dpage, yes I understand what you are speaking of and it could have been taken that way. I am not looking for a size I am more curious as to what folks think in regards to color, head shape, movement during the fall of the jig, style of hook, etc.
I can throw a jig with a color that's a little off but I cannot throw a jig that has a bad hook design or one that I think is bad so to me it's the hook. All aspects of a jig are important but if I had to choose one I would go with a D&L Baby Advantage. JMO
It kinda depends. I like to fish a jig real slow. My fishing partner fishes one fast. We let the fish tell us which way they like it. I got my confidence up when I started to make my own. I use pretty good hooks and can tinker with the weedguard or bait itself which helps build confidence in what you are throwing.
I also fish a bout 200 colors my partner uses 3 maybe 4 when he feels froggy. Sometimes it seems the fish want something a little different and my partner digs in my skirt bag and pulls one out and he will start catching fish, other times it does not matter.
All in all I don't think it makes a huge difference. What also helped me out a bunch was I went fishing when they were bitting good, took out all my rods and baits out of my boat except jigs and went fishing. I was forced to fish only one bait and I started to catch fish and figured a few things out. I would rather fish with a jig than just about any other bait, with the exception of a buzz bait. Good luck Ryan.
IMO, I think the football head is one of the best for open water - not so much for grass. One of the biggest drawbacks is the weed guard I don't like having to trim them I don't like them too thick with too many strands. But I really don't care for the wire design either I seem to get snagged alot more. ther was a jig that was made that Uncle Lee's used to carry that had a thick nylon? hoop that worked great for smallies and other bass but the small design of them made them great for smallies.
I was fishing at Bull Shoals a couple years ago and picked up some jigs made there locally by "boogerman" they were short shanked wide gapped hooks with a football head and the brush guard was crooked so no trimming was needed again JMO
What ever the fisherman developes confidence in......my favorite three colors are black, black and black
I agree with Don, But I like to trim the gaurd a little and sread it out some.

I like the recessed eye football heads. A bunch of different colors are not that important IMO. I usually get either black (with blue or brown) or some natural light brown color. If you see me out throwing one there is a 95% chance it'll have a paca on and 5% chance I ran out of pacas...![]()
It must fall head first. Hook must have a turn out on the point. Shank big enough for a trailer. Head must be shaped for the cover you are fishing.
I would like mine with a 7#er on the hook.
