I know there are not too many people that will agree with me here, but I'm used to that. When I started fishing walking topwaters I was creek fishing, and using a small spinning outfit. So when I tried to use the bigger Sammys the only way I could reproduce the incredible action was with spinning gear.

I use a 6'6" ML spinning rod. I also use 20# braided line. I realize that the rods in this power range arn't rated to throw a 1/2oz sammy (the 100) But I have found that it makes no difference in effectiveness of the bait and technique. The ML rod helps make casts that can cover a ton of water, the braid helps set the hook at such distances and then the flex in the rod helps keep bigger fish on while they have a mouth full of treble hooks, instead of ripping them out.

Personally I have found better success using braided line tied directly to the bait instead of an extra O- ring. I have tried both, alot.

The people that make fun of my "fairy stick" Normally use a 5'10"- 6'3" medium- MH Baitcasting outfit. Some prefer the pistol grip so the handle isn't in your way while twitching the rod.
