If they stocked those in some of the pressured places i have fished they will be clubed to death with lures they will not have a chance to kill bass

My uncle and I caught a few up in Boonville Indiana last year, Killed them on sight I must say.
They screw up the eco-system BADLY

JD7.62,
I caught one (bowfin) at Patoka Lake 2 years ago & have heard of many others caught there. Fisheater & I were in our clubs classic & when I hooked that thing I thought it was all but over, in our heads, we already had the check spent, until it surfaced beside the boat. Ugliest thing I had ever seen. Unhooked it and got rid of it ASAP, not even a picture. Slimed up fisheaters boat pretty nicely though. Sorry John.
Jason
I think there is confusion between the snakehead and bowfin. Snakehead is an exotic invasive species, the bowfin is natural to the state of ky. These are two different species. and I agree with Ryan there is no way that the Fish and Wildlife dept. of any state would recommend killing a native fish, whether it be a bowfin, chain pickerel, or any other native fish. killing these fish has just become popular becuase bass fisherman don't want to catch them or don't want them feeding on bass and competing against bass for resources.
Slowride, that is VERY odd that DNR would say to kill a native fish in a NATURAL lake of all things. Very strange especially since amia calva do not really compete with bass no more then any other fish in a lake. Like I said, earlier these fish have live side by side for MILLIONS of years, the bass dont need our help.
Ohiorivercatfisher, are you SURE you caught a snakehead? I REALLY doubt it. There are only TWO populations of Channa argus in the US and neither are anywhere close to the place you were fishing. I am afraid to tell you that you probably illegally killed a native bowfin. Also can you please provide me with valid scientific literature that has proven that channa has destroyed any ecosystem? Id would LOVE to see it.
Bandit, I may have to get up to patoka this spring and see if I can catch some! Rough fish can be fun, you admitted yourself you thought it was a big bass!
Magiksmallie, I am afraid you are right. Too much confusion between the native bowfin and exotic channa. The EASIEST way to tell is that bow fin have a short anal fin, chann will have an anal fin that is about half the length of the dorsal.
Interesting bowfin fact, "cajun caviar" is bowfin eggs and is getting more and more popular as ever with some good money being made!
To sum it up:
Bowfin are native, they do not harm bass or any other sport fish. Heck go to the bass pro shops in Clarksville and look at the one they have. Its always skinny and they constantly replace it cause they die on them because the simply cannot compete with the other "game fish" in there *I know I know that its a tank but still*
Snakeheads are exotic. Unless you are fishing the Potomac, the White River or in EXTREME south florida, it is very very unlikely you have caught one. Snakeheads, like any invasive can cause harm to the environment, however their ailities and potential harm are GROSSLY overstated. Other organisims such as the round goby, zebra mussles, silver carp, big head carp (bottom of the food chain organisims) can wreak far more havoc then an apex predator and we all should be worried more about them. Sadly even though zebra mussles cause tens if not HUNDREDS of MILLIONS of dollars in damage a year its not nearly as cool of a news story as fish that has teeth and is said to walk on land.....
I got a chance see catch that show last night. Thanks for posting it was on last night, i taped it. WOW what a mean fish, the bowfin i caught out of lake wawasee in northern indiana looked just like that snakehead??? Anyway i also watched the bass show on nat geo and that was a great show, good story lines and documentary, i remember when the guys were on the cover of bassmaster and foul hooked that bass, what a monster.
Please don't tell me it was that "Fishzilla" garbage they call a documentary? Did you notice the "no swimming" sign near the Crofton Pond that they showed trying to get you to believe it was put there because of the snakeheads? What BS. Or what about the part when they put one and land and it just wiggles about. Haha throw a channel cat on land and it will do the same thing. ZOMG!
Google image search the snakeheads below and tell me what ya think!
Channa barca
Channa bleheri
Channa pleuropthalma
Channa aurantimaculata
Channa gachua
Channa pulchra
The show was interesting, but i have nothing to base it on....and really don't care........
JD7.62,
You defend this fish like it is your child. Seen a lot of movies that go just like this and the person who defends the problem like you have turn out to be the person who is introducing the problem to the public. I would cool it on bragging on these fish, some one might start watching you. LOL!!!!!!! Largemouth are also a exotic fish but it sure has been a big hit with a lot of people. Maybe we should look at these fish with a open mind, a 8ft mean fish with teeth would be a heck of a challenge to get in the boat and from what i have read these fish are excellent on the table
I would love to catch one of these fish. Catching Mudfish was fun and I never backed away from the opportunity.JD7.62,
