I thought I would let yall in on something that I came across. People will still try to tell ya that you can hit as many fish in the winter as you can in the summer, but this is not true and I will tell you why. Im not sayin that you cant still catch a fish, Im sayin that you wont get anywhere NEAR as many fish. If you get 1 hit all day in the dead of winter dont think that your not fishin right or that your a bad fishermen, they just dont bite as much, and heres why. In the summer water temps of 70 and over fish motabalizim kicks up and its digestive system breaks down 1 shad in 6 to 7 hours. In the winter with water temps of 50 and under the fish motabalizim slows and it can take up to 48 hours to digest just 1 small shad. So now you know why winter time fishing is the way it is.

but not every fish feeds at the same time all the time.... in my own opinion there is always fish feeding on a lake at any given time..... but what u said makes perfect sense.... i know when the shad go into death spirals them ole brown fish will over gourge themselves on them... i like it when a fish barfs up a whole shad family on the carpet......i know its going to be a good day....

Thats true about not all fish feeding at the same time but think about how many are feeding with a 6-8hr motabalizim vs 48hr at different times. Just playing the odds here! lol

I agree some what with what you are saying but ive caught alot of LM when water temps are only in the mid 50's r so. for example I was on goose lake in the early spring I boated approx 30 Lm. and far as other species of fish some really turn on when water temps cool down, example sauger,walleye,Sm,bluecat, etc. I caught some big bluecats in the dead winter on the ohio river.for example my son and I was fishing the ohio river on a January day water temps were in the 40,s we boated several BC the two biggest WT 43&58 pds. it can be done just my opion

i think you get more of a reaction bite then a feeding bite in the winter. thats why i stick to more reaction type baits in the winter.

the scientific notion is hypothetical.

i.e. a warmwater discharge may hold more biting fish in winter than in summer. favorable temps will also be species dependent.

You can catch alot of perch icefishing in one spot in Indiana

i understand what u are saying but what i think is completely crazy is the days when u dont think u are going to do any good is the day that u usually do.... for me like a bluebird day in jan fnf fishing adn i go out and catch some good uns.... when the deck is stacked against me....fish are crazy creatures... just when u think u got em figured out.... wham here comes a curve ball...

I spent many yrs ice fishing and and the bigest bass i caught was on jan2,it was out of season and live bait.I know the fish are slower but don't beleave they eat less.Its just they are smarter when they slow down(lol) arn't we all.I showed Buzzbaitwb yesterday a hook that i used when i ice fished and if the tip was bare the fish didn't bite it.Thats from yrs of sitting in a shanty watching the fish swim in and turn and leave.I miss ice fishing but not all the work too make it fun.Terry Adolph

Its just the Science of how the cold blooded fish metabolism works thats found fact. You still will catch fish in the winter but thats just how fish metabolism works.

I wish I had a boat, then I could fish in water that wasn't frozen right now. Maybe tomorrow or the next day some water will thaw. Any suggestions?
