Swimbaits

Every fishing show that comes on TV now is all about the swimbait. In particular is the Berkley hollow body design. Has anyone tested this new type of fishing from the west? Going to Ky Lake in spring and thought about trying it out.

Swimbaits do work well, and will catch monster bass. I've caught some nice fish on a swimbait at ken lake. However this is a bait made to fish clear water and they are costly, depending on which bait you get you can only catch so many on one bait......have fun

i love they way the bass magic and the yum money minnow look and they have great action and produce well,IMO. the only down side i see is matching them with the right hook. the screw-lock hooks seem to tear the bait up more often and the weighted EWG hooks seem to always come loose at the nose of the bait. other than that they are great.

Will these baits work in off color water, or clear only. Rough and Nolin are not what I would consider clear, not like Dale anyway, but they always have that greenish tint to it, so would they work there? Never tried one there, but would like to give it a shot, just dont want to waste my time if they will not work in that color water.

You need at least 3 ft visability for them to do well. But really even clearer than that is better. There are all types but the Hollowbellies are best fished like spinnerbaits covering water and fished around cover.

My favorite way to work a swimbait is with the heavy storm wildeye swimbaits. Ive caught a couple 3lb schooling bass in stained water with them but its usually a clear water deal. The way i work it is to find a good clear water stucture and just cast out, let it sink, and then rip it up like a casting spoon. I cant even stand other swimbaits unless im burning them, but this swimbaits alot of fun for me. And ive caught some really good fish doin this and the way they hit it is second to none. if you havnt experienced a good swimbait bite i suggest throwing one until you do.

Swimbaits, particularly the Hollow Bellies from Berkley work well. You do have to be careful rigging them. If the hook isn't rigged straight, the bait is useless. I have caught some good fish on them, but only certain times of the year do they work. You also have to vary your retrieve to find out if the fish want them swimming fast, or creeping along.

I'm not a big wal mart fan, but they are in the process of stocking their new baits. Today, I got two or three packages of pre-rigged swim baits. They are about the size and color of the shad I usually see down on KY and Barkley lakes. Despite getting ready to start hitting the lake, I am actually giving very serious consideration to holding on to these baits until later in the summer.

Last summer I was fishing chatterbaits and spinnerbaits under the schools of shad. I was chasing the school as it moved through the bay, and was hooking up with some really big LM's under the schools as I let the baits flutter to the bottom. I am thinking that maybe using these swim baits under the schools of bait fish in the summer could be very good. Also the water is much clearer this time of year.

Heck, it's only money and we can't take it with us, might as well spend it to try new stuff on the water.

Swim baits will work in stained to muddy water just not near as good as clear water.
