Carpet on a outside deck/porch

I have a outside deck/porch that is made out of treated lumber and it has been very slick (almost like ice) for awhile now if any type of moisture (rain, dew....) settles on it.

I was thinking of maybe trying marine carpet since it is fairly weather resistant and won't easily fade, also the color choices are a lot better than most of the outside carpets I've seen.

Anyone used marine carpet for this? Is glue or staples the way to go for holding it down? Any tips or ideas.

A quick side note, I pressure washed the deck with deck wash late last year and it seemed to help a little for a short while but still wasn't very safe.

I've seen lots of peeps put the indoor/outdoor carpet down on decks / patio's before. You got a choice here, if'n you want the carpet to be easy to remove when you need to replace it then go with the staples that don't rust. But if you want the carpet to really stick down and not move ( any ) then go with the glue.... But maybe this type of question should be asked of the Professionals at the places like , LOWE'S or Home Depot.... Good Luck

Yes it can be done, however be careful not to make it too permanent with glues. liquid nails or such. Stapling may be alright but you are trapping more water which will start even more mildew and mold as it will dry very slowly if at all. I know this isn't what you want to hear but keeping it free of mildew and clean will solve your problem, because that is what is occurring.

Here is another option for you. Clean it with a part water part bleach solution and get it very clean. Then install adhesive backed strips of non-skid walk surface. You've seen it on boats and pedways to keep people from falling. When the wood is clean and dry, place this on the deckboards in strips. They do not have to be as wide as the entire deck plank but at least make it three inches wide or so. Place it on each one, and it comes in various colors to choose from. This will stop your problem and still allow natural drying of your deck. People think because wood is treated they can trap water and it's o.k., not true. You don't want to trap water on any wood as it will lead to other problems.

I have a deck on my camper in a private fishing club. nothing facy but I had the same problem I took some fine sand blasting sand about two cups and mixed with a gallon of clear thin varnish mix frequently in the roller pan and roll it on a clean deck worked fine for 2 years cost me about 18.00 to do a 12x28 deck..

Talke to the folks at Porter paint. There is paint and most likely sealers on the market to take care of issues such as this. I know that such paints are used in food service areas to prevent slips and falls.

Hall is right about cleaning the deck only I would add dawn dish liquid to the water bleach mix and scrub it with a broom which I have done. By doing so it well make a big improvement on the deck by itself.

Still don't know what solution I want to go with but I guess I've got time time to figure it out since I'm not getting the pressure washer out anytime to soon. Will just have to watch my step for a while longer.

Another thing I read about yesterday was using indoor/outdoor double-sided tape to hold the carpet down. The tape was something like 4.5" wide x 15' long for $4.00 and said it would stick to any carpet backing. Sounds quick, easy and the price was alright but probably is to good to be true. Anyone tried this stuff out?
