Try chewing tobacco sometime (if you never had)
and see how you feel.

Fish aren't as stupid as you think, a bass may hit just about anything, but they also
spit it out if they don't like it. every fisherman has experienced that.
they definetly don't swallow everything.
That prooves they taste and smell, and once they hit it and spit it out
it's really hard to get them to hit the same one again.
That's why bait selection is important, prooving they do choose.
I'll give you that, a concentration of any substance would or could be too much for a Bass. I'm a believer in scents and dyes but have found about a 50-50 proven rate of when it helps or hurts. I only started the scents because I wanted my baits to be slippery when flippin' grass.

The dyes came in because a well placed color looks great on soft plastics (to me).
I don't see smoking as a problem to catching fish since it really is such a low dose of scent transfered to the bait if any. Especially a soft plastic bait that already smells of plastic or scent and or bottom muck and or weeds.
