I think fish can sense it on your bait, and I think they find it repulsive. Use some spray garlic by Spike-It to mask the odor you might transfer from your hand to your bait. I only use it on soft-plastics though because it can damage the finishes on your crankbaits.

I don't smoke but I guess my only comment is if you do smoke please do not throw your cigarette butts in the lake, river or stream.

I don't think it makes a bit of difference. I've seen guys dip plastic worms in gas and catch fish on them... Dan... And I don't smoke...

I remember reading the book "Knowing Bass" last year. It's the one by the guy from Berkley fishing. If I remember correctly, gas and oil did not really have a negative affect on bass. Deet and sunscreen did have a huge negative affect. I don't remember about tobacco, I think it was listed too but I forget the results. I'll try to find that book and look it up.

    Re: Smoking

I have known plenty of guys who smoke and fish and I don't think it matters at all. I'm sure some Pro's do it as well. Remember Basil Bacon? I believe Zell was a smoker as well, maybe still is?

well i am one of those who lights up to catch a fish, when the ledge bite is slow, the best thing a person can do is slow down dragging that rig. i catch a lot of fish by casting out, dragging my rig into the strikezone, and lighting up. you'd be surprised how many fish that catches. i have found no difference in the amount of bites you get smoking or not. but, it is a nasty habit and a bad influence on the sport. btw, most of my butts go in a container on the boat, not in the lake

Good job, I hate seeing them nasty **** things floating everywhere in the water. Hey guys you ones that do throw them into the lake, I've got an idea, QUIT DOING IT! Those filters are forever, they will be around when you are pushing up daisies, just my two cents....

    Re: Smoking

Nicotine is extremely toxic to fish.
One grain of tobacco from a cigarette can kill every fish
    in my aquarium at home.
I'm sure the scent can make a difference.
