There are a lot of pro's that smoke that we don't see on TV (Zell Rowland, Kevin Wirth, Guido Hibdon) just to name a few. If they make a living at fishing and they smoke I would say that it doesn't matter to the fish.

I know a lot of guides that smoke. I don't know all guides obviously, so I can't say that they all do it, but many do.

One of the things I recently read was that in sweat, there are some offensive odors, and there is a thought that the more you sweat, and have sweat on your hands, the more that it gets transferred to your baits. Thus, less fish.

I don't smoke, but have fished with a lot of guys that do, and they really out caught me some days, and others I out caught them.

I also agree with the thought that throwing your cig butts in the water is offensive. I asked all my companions that smoke to use an old soda bottle with a little water in it as an ash tray. I hate seeing the butts floating on the water.

According to the book, one study showed minnows to be repelled by nicotine and that it is suspected that Bass and other fish would be too. Not sure how much nicotine would get transferred to the lure just by smoking though.

    Smile Re: Smoking

Twenty-four years ago I quit smoking cold turkey, after reading an article in a fishing magazine that talked about how fish could smell and detect nicotene from cigarettes that got on your line and lures. The article mentioned that this was a big turn off to bass. At that very moment, I put out my last cigarette and never went back. Today I swim a mile a day and bike several miles per week. THANK YOU FISHING, you may have saved my life!!!!

here is my two cents on how nicotine gets on lures.. when u smoke your body collects the nicotine and it gets in your blood stream and pores and pretty much everywhere else... so when u pic up a lure you have oils on your hands that your body secretes mainly in your finger tips and if nicotine is in your body then it will be transfered thru your fingertips to the lure as a oil.... and oil sticks around for a bit on your lure so i honestly dont know what tell ya..... if u smoke and catch fish... smoke and catch fish...

I don't smoke, but I do chew Red Man loose leaf tobacco, so I am not sure how much of a difference it makes, but I will say this. I have been in the boat with Kevin Wirth on numerous occasions and he smokes a lot. I have yet to see him have problem catching fish and I would assume he will be smoking during the Classic next week, which is his tenth time to qualify (I think).

    Re: Smoking

I used to smoke----especially while fishing. I have quit smoking the last few years and I catch less fish now then I ever did----LOL!!!!! Although, I know I am healthier then I used to be! I just wish I could catch more fish and not have to smoke to do it.
