Bald Eagles are very common on Cumberland and Dale now. I love seeing them, thay are truely a majestic bird.
There was one down at Peabody 2 years ago that held still on the nest long enough to get a couple of pics of. She did a wonderful job of thinning out the water snakes there. I just hope she got that cottonmouth that tried to be a passenger in the boat there one day, that wasn't any fun at all. Matter of fact it was down right scary.
I used to see them on KY Lake, they are indeed awesome. You know what else KY has? The most miles of rivers, streams, and lakes of any state in the U.S., the largest elk herd east of the Rocky Mountains, record populations of whitetail deer and wild turkeys and, apparently a large enough population of black bears for us to have a limited hunt this year just to name a few! Go KDFWR!
Any of you Oldham Co. boy's seen the nest in the medium going south on 71 right before the new Buckner exit??? It's big and has some type of big bird in it..Probably hawk but who knows...Chuck
I work out that way---I will have to watch for it.
Saw Bald Eagles at KY Lake last year and also saw one on the Ohio River--Indiana side up near 18 mile island. Coolest bird out there!!!! Simply awesome to have them back!
I did not know that about the eagle population, but I'm happy to hear it! And I too have always gotten good service from KDFWR. I've emailed fisheries biologists with questions a few times, and they've always been quick to respond with great answers to my questions.
Every year at Dale Hollow they have these Eagle Watch Weekends, in fact there's one this coming weekend. Staying at the lodge and spending the days watching eagles.. that just sounds like a great way to see the lake! I won't be making this one, but that's on my "life list."
