    Big South Fork Walleye

Next weekend a good number of us Scott co. boys are going to explore the BSFCR around the old Blue Heron area. Never been. I'm confident we can trick some walleye if they're home, my question is, will we be too early for this location? Is there a better place to start looking? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Dr.B.

Some things to consider, from someone who's fished down there before... If the locals are out in force, the fish are there. Catching them may be another story. If there are no locals on the banks, you're probably wasting your time. If you are planning to use a boat be aware of rapidly changing conditions on the river. The BSF is a designated "wild river", it rises and falls in a mater of hours so a ramp that was usable in the morning may not be usable by afternoon, the riffle you went through is now a rock garden or the gentle current may become dangerously swift. Take a spare prop and tools. At some point the river becomes no motors allowed so check the park regulations.

Bank fishing is straight forward enough, limited access so pack light and plan on footing it a ways. also plan on losing equipment due to snags. Keeps your vehicle locked up tight and don't temp anyone by leaving gear in sight.

Please also be aware of the fragile ecco system. Consider releasing any females that have not yet spawned. The simple truth is that the walleye are hard to catch, so enjoy the scenery, adventure and the nice smallmouth that you might hook into, but don't be disappointed if you blank on the eyes.

    enjoy

I had an uncle "way back when" stationed at Rock Creek ( IIRC) in the CC and he has some stories of the monster 'eyes caught there in those days. He'd tell of camps right on the shoals (complete with roaring fires) that must have been a real site , do the locals still do that in mass?

You gentlemen are awsome and I'm going to tell you why. My pretty little sister-inlaw showed up last friday at Central Baptist with fever and chills. Turns out she was septic with the infection lodged in her heart. They replaced her heart valve, targeted and identified the bacteria, and saved her little life. Now, I'm the last indian standing when it comes to men in the family so I've been dealing with a lot of hysterics, crying, etc. Now that everything smells like flowers, the women have given me the golden ticket! 40hrs (exactly) to go fishing. River Rat, thanks for the #. Ace, good luck with the walley on your end. Bird Strike, don't worry we'll release the jennies, but the jacks are in danger of ending up in a bucket. Bird Strike, even if I slipped and fell in the river, came back to the parking lot and got car jacked, I would'nt be dissapointed. (long winter) Certainly after the last nine days. God bless you boys, and thanks again.

    Wow!

I certainly hope things get much better for you in the very near future (and stay that way) Also I hope you get to catch your limit every time you get out in those 40 hours!

Appreciate it Ace. We just got lucky. Lot of folks out there not getting good news, so we're grateful. I'm sure we'll get skunked, but I promise you a good story when we get back. Again, thanks.
