With that kinda weight you are taxing that 40, that's all the little fella can handle. A different pitched prop may help but will not overcome that much weight in the boat, too small of motor.

I kind of agree with a couple of others...the boat loaded with two men is about all that 40 can handle in my own opinion. I guess you could have some fun with it though, when that third guy gets in you could tell him he needs to lose some weight because your boat was planing out just fine until he got on board.
You can try to use a fin, it will help in getting the boat on plane a lot faster. For an 40hp motor may cost 35 to 40 bucks.
Do you have tilt and trim. I have a 17ft lowe with a 88HP on it tilt and trim makes a big difference.
it has a trim but it doesnt help.........i think ill try the dolphin or whatever they are called, other than loading the front down or leaving big brother at home its seems to be the cheapest option.
