Several years back there was a guy down there who was using live skimmer minnows and for several day he and two others caught limts of 4 and 5 lbrs, the sad thing is they kept all of them, I saw these fish as he lived across the street from me, so I know that they were in there. Also look up the river, I used to wade from a small creek near Akersville, to the river and down the river some there, used to catch a ton of good smallies up that area, but there is a place on Barren that is around the area of Bailys point, that holds some good smallies, but it is hard to locate. Good luck.
i had ben going to barren since i could walk till high school. and never seen or cought a smallmouth. but last year in the fall i cought a couple of good ones and had a 5 to 6 pounder at the boat and it spit my crank back at me before we could get the net. and that was in peter creek up by the bridge.

Used to catch several in the late 80s, early 90s, but rarely catch them any more. I can't remember the last time I caught a good one. There's just not that many in there now, compared to back then.
I remember fishing a big bass classic in ~'90, and out of the top 10 biggest fish brought to the scales most were smallmouth.
sounds like that was some good old days. back in those days and the 70's i'll all about deer hunting and rivers but now the boy gone of to school i'll hooked on boatfishing. and it's easy on the old legs too
fished a tournament last year during the fall and had 4 keeper smallmouth. only 1 was big enough to out weigh the largemouth we had. lets just say that was a good day
