    Screaming baitcaster

Does anyone know what causes a baitcasting reel to "scream" when you cast? I do my own maintenance and have done so for many years. This problem also affects casting distance. I previously only had this problem with Ambassadeur reels and could not stop it. Now my older Curado is doing it. Thanks in advance for any help.

I had an old team diawa do that, took it to a reel guy, and he took it apart and cleaned it, and it has never done it again. So if you know a reel guy take it to him and let him clean it up for you and that should solve the problem.

I have 2 older Curado's that had never been cleaned after using them for 4 years. They started losing casting distance and making funny sounds to which I got on the internet and learned how to take them apart and clean them. Never had a problem since, got back all of my original casting distance that was hard to tell it was going away little by little and even cleaned my buddy's reels for him. Too bad for him that he forgot they were freshly cleaned the next trip out, had just spooled up with nice new Seagar Invisix, hit the button to make that first cast and BOOM, birds were nesting all over his reel. One of those that is so bad, you don't even attempt to pick out, just cut off the lure and shove her back in the box. Not funny in that he just wasted $15 worth of line, not funny to see him not to get to use his baitcaster that day, but was funny watching him cut it all out that night at the room cussing all the time because he forgot that I had cleaned them. I will clean all my stuff on a yearly basis from now on. Easy to do and not much to it.

A couple of mine were doing it so this winter I have replaced all the bearings and haven't had issues and gained 20yds per cast.

Sounds to me like a job for Hot Sauce. That's the only lubricant I use now. All my fishing buddies are bringing their reels to me now to have them cleaned and lubed with Hot Sauce. It's pretty pricey but well worth the money for the added distance and smooth casting.

What site did you find that showed you how to break apart and clean your reels.

    Re: Screaming baitcaster

Hot Sauce is the best stuff on the market! I clean and lube my reels once every season -- right before they go into storage so that they're ready to go when the new season begins. Taking apart reels is so easy....just remember how they go back together! I had some old curados that I did this to every year and they casted like they were brand new, fresh out of the box. Anyone who doesn't clean their high-priced reels every so often will be replacing parts or buying new reels all together. It's kinda like changing the oil in your car......

Probably just need to give them a good cleaning, oil and lube. My abus get like that after I've abused them for a while. Strip them down, clean them out, oil parts that need oil, lube parts that need lube, reassemble and they're good to go.

I just found this one pretty quickly. I know this is not the exact one I found back in the summer but I do know I searched, Shimano Curado Cleaning Tips or Techniques thru Google and found several. Look it up, the one I did find had pictures and stuff and even offered some places to buy new bearings, to which I did not, for mine were in good shape but they run around $7 per if I remember correctly. It really was not that hard to do. Did about 8 of my reels one day then had my buddy drop all of his off the next and did all of them in a couple of hours as well.

    Re: Screaming baitcaster

The only reels I have ever seen that do this are Abu Garcia Ambassadeurs, I know this doesn't sound professional or anything but the only way I was able to get them to stop "screaming" was to dunk them in the water and they'll stop.

    Re: Screaming baitcaster

There is a plastic gear on Ambassadeurs which drives the level wind. It is on the opposite side of the reel from the handle. Most of the time you can get some lube in around the base of this gear and it will stop the whining when you cast. I don't know if Curados are the same but I'm betting that they are. Good luck.
