I witnessed my partners curado do that a couple of times today. He said it only does it when its raining and his reel gets soaked.

Too cold. That is dumbest thing I have heard. Doesn't that mean that everybodys would squeek in the cold and doesn't that meen it wouldn't do it in the summer. I had some doing it in the summer befor I had them cleaned and then they worked as good as new.

i had two quantum e400's that after about 9 yrs of being used and not cleaned they would do the same and i would do like magiksmallie and dip them in the water to take care of the problem until the next time i was able to go. i think i'll take them apart and clean them since thats all they might need. can take one apart and use the other as a reference to hopefully get back together

Here's the best site I know of that shows how to clean and lube your own reels. Get you some of the yellow rocket fuel they talk about on the site for oiling your bearings. It's what all of the guys that clean and service reels use and there's a reason for it.

OK, now you have the fix for the problem.....disassemble, clean, oil/lube, and reassemble.

Now for the prevention of the problem:

1. ALWAYS rinse your reels with clean, cold water (tap water is fine), after EVERY fishing trip.

2. Oil and lube your reels at least every two months, more often if heavily used.

3. Remember that bearings and all shafts get a light (very light) coat of oil, all gears get grease (more is not better, just a dab'll do ya). Don't forget to put a drop of oil (NOT grease) on the level-wind shaft.

DISASSEMBLE AND THOROUGHLY CLEAN ALL PARTS OF THE REEL WITH ALCOHOL AND COTTON SWAB AT LEAST ONCE EVERY 6 MONTHS. RE-LUBE AND REASSEMBLE.

A little maintenance goes a long way. A properly cared-for reel will give you many years of trouble-free service and enjoyment.

Always use a light machine oil and NEVER use petroleum jelly in place of quality reel grease.

I just found this one pretty quickly. I know this is not the exact one I found back in the summer but I do know I searched, Shimano Curado Cleaning Tips or Techniques thru Google and found several. Look it up, the one I did find had pictures and stuff and even offered some places to buy new bearings, to which I did not, for mine were in good shape but they run around $7 per if I remember correctly. It really was not that hard to do. Did about 8 of my reels one day then had my buddy drop all of his off the next and did all of them in a couple of hours as well.

Very interesting replies. Cold weather is definitley a factor. I cleaned and oiled the bearings again on Saturday as I have always done when I have encountered this problem. On Sunday's fishing outing the reel was still screaming early in the A.M. but not as bad as before. Of course Sunday's 45 degrees was much warmer than the 25 I fished in this week. As the day went on Sunday, and the temps went up, the reel began to act normally. The Curado does not have the palm plate side, level wind gear like the ABU's do, therefore that is not the problem. I do intend to try the Hot Sauce but it appears that if the weather is warm I won't have an answer until November.

Gilly is right...........AND if the reel is an old school curado, or citica or whatever, it probalby uses a REALLY CHEAP ABEX 7 bearing.

4x10x3 or 4x10x4.

Use this site....... http://www.vxb.com/ , and buy some SERIOUS ceramic bearings.

Replace the end cap bearing, and the tension bearing, and you will NEVER have a problem again..........and you will NEVER have to oil them again either.

BEST bearings ever..............and I replaced them on every reel I own......
