    Re: Hybrids/Whites going yet?

If I were to go to taylorsville for some of the White action, where would be the best place to put in at, and what lures would you use. Would you look for them as if they were in the jumps? I have always heard about the quick action of whited but have never done it. Some basic info about what to do would be great thanks.

Put in at Van Buren ramp and head up the Salt. It is really hit or miss at T-Ville. Throw small cranks, spoons, jerkbaits, etc and if they are there, you'll get into them. Good luck, hope you do better there than I have!

Post some results if you end up trying Taylorsville. I may get out Wednesday if the weather holds up but I am in the same situation, I have never really fished for the whites. Would like to give it a try soon so let us know how it goes.

Guy at the ramp says we missed the run weeks ago.
We have only done this once before a few years ago...so what gives? Just a bad day or have they already run. Once they stage and run how long does that last? I get conflicting info on what temp triggers it. How far up do they go?
Guy at the ramp is nuts! They should be running right now, but this cold weather at night and all these weather fronts are holding them back. Three years ago the run wasn't until the first week of April...so I can't imagine we've missed it by several weeks. That would have meant they were running at the end of Feb. I'll be out on the Dix or the tailwaters of the CR on Thursday and will post a report. Speak up if you them!

If you've never been upriver from Van Buren, be aware of the mud flats on the right hand side just beyond the ramp. Stay on the left side of the lake going up and follow the old river channel. Idle, and pay close attention to your depth finder. The water covers the flats right now so you can't see them. Great place to wreck a boat. And when you finally get up in the river you'll find (obvious where they stage) the presence of a boat tends to scatter the fish. (Unless the water is good and stained) Two or three boats can ruin the day. If the run is on, they won't be in the stage area as much as well upstream beyond the reach of the boat. Try enjoying the WMA trail that goes from Glensboro to the Good Night bridge. It's a pleasant hike, and you'll catch more fish. A Blue Fox vibrax #2 (chrome) kills 'em. A simple white rooster tail will work, but after a couple fish it ends up being just a bent piece of wire. You will see locals on the river, and you will see law enforcement. Be aware that the creel is 10 fish. 5 over 15'' and five under, or 10 under 15". Hope this helps a little. - Dr.B

My dad and I went up the Salt river on Thursday the 2nd and caught our limit in about an hour once we found a school. Water temp was 57, murky/clear and we were in about 3 feet of water. No one else seemed to be catching anything though. A few other boats even threw in the same area but didn't catch anything. Were were using 1/4 oz white and chartruese roostertails. Only a few caught were fat females. Great fun to double up for a few straight minutes!

Fished Cumberland tail waters last weekend and found some really nice sized whites anywhere below the dam that the water slowed down. Pockets, breaks, just down stream from the Kendall ramp and just above the next paved ramp..... Trolled crank baits and cuaght a good number of nice sized whites with an occasional trout thrown in for goo measure!

Sweet! The local action is heating up! I have questions; can I wade the riffles at T-Ville, and here is the zinger (if you feel more comforatable sending a pm even better) can anyone tell me some patterns I can tie to have a good chance at a nice brown or some rainbows at C-Land? I have never fished it and hopefully me and my bro's will be able to make it before April is over. I'm not to comfortable with my nymphing technique though.

Not much of a fly fisherman, sorry....... I do know they were hitting BRIGHT colors chartreuse, yellow, almost any bright color I usually save for walleye. Funny thing is, they were hitting about 15' down.......
