Oh yeah, dead things, especially minnows and mussels, will also bring those little buggers in, if I recall correctly.

You can usually buy a good one for catching bait at your local tackle shops. The descriptions on here are good. They look like two inverted funnels small sides facing each other > < with wire all around. They usually separate in the middle which is where you tie your bait and empty your catch. If you have ever seen Craws up close and personal you know that they can swim quickly and get where they want to go. They can swim up, around, in, etc. They can get out of traps but it is more difficult. You won't have any problem getting them into the trap as long as you use a chicken bone with a little meat on it.

As a kid, I used to cut the spout out of a 2-liter bottle and push what was left of the top down into the bottle to make a cone with a hole about the size of a crawdad. Then, poke holes all over the body of the bottle for some water circulation and attach a rope (so you don't lose it). Throw some raw bacon in it and submerge it.

I think we made one out of hardward cloth also.

I used to use a wire minnow trap when I was younger and would catch quite a few - just like other said make sure the hole is close to the bottom. We would use the same bait we would for crab traps. Take some chicken necks and backs - and leave them in the sun all day - until the smell would almost make you puke, and tie them in there. They seem to love it - the smellier the better.

Best one i ever saw was made out of one of those 5 gal water bottles. Cut it of about one quarter from the neck, invert the neck, staple it together, or use epoxy or what ever, cut a dooronly three sides, drill holes, use what ever you like for bait, works fine for minnows also. But they get stolen.
