Re: Leaving for KY Lake Wed Morning - I'm Back

Said I would post when I returned so here it goes.....
Overall I would not call it a great trip, maybe I was expecting too much
I believe if the sun would have stayed out for Friday and Saturday it would have been different. Fish were starting to turn on Thursday. Water temps at Ky Lake ranged fron 57-58, Barkley was colder at 55-56 We caught both bass and crappie Wed and Thursday while the sun was shining but that changed Friday and Sat. What was dissapointing about the bass fishing were the keeper fish were hard to find. I caught a 5lber on Wed and a 4lber on Thurs one other boat with us caught a 6lber on wed and these were the only fish above 15 " that we caught out of about 100 bass total. Short fish are EVERYWHERE. My 2 bass were caught on a yellow jerkbait while the 6 lber was caught on a shallow running sexy shad crankbait. All 3 fish were on secondary points, shallow
As far as Crappie fishing goes, they were starting to turn on by Thur afternoon b/c the temp had raised to the upper 58 degrees when the sun was out, we had 15 keepers that afternoon with as many if not more throw backs in the mix but all of that changed once the rain and clouds moved in by Friday. Would somebody start keeping Yellow Bass - they are Everywhere. To sum it up ..... both species are itching to come shallow if the weater would relax and the temps would rise a little. The extended foecast for this week were highs in the middle 60's with mostly sunny skies. Crappie will be on fire next weekend and into that next week if it holds weather wise

Re: Leaving for KY Lake Wed Morning - I'm Back

Thanks for the report. Now you know why I hesitated to write my report early last week...the changing weather patterns did exactly as I suspected they would do but I wanted to get a few more reports from Wed and Thursday and a closer look at the upcoming developing weather patterns before I wrote my report. Your report mirrors a number of reports I received.....a few big bass and lots of short fish....as my report also indicated, some reports indicated good catches of keeper bass during the same period. It seemed more of a feast or famine on the keeper bass during the latter part of the week. I attribute this as much to the bass starting to transition as much the weather patterns.

I hope everyone got off the water safely on Saturday...especially those fishing on N. Barkley. Those were some nasty storms that came thru the area around 3:00 pm.

Chris: Thanks for calling me to let me know you guys made it back in safe on Saturday....I had dropped my clients off at the dock early because I saw the storms coming and was on my way back out in the storm to check on you guys to make sure you were ok and bring you in if need be when you called. Hope your engine problem is just a little one and not serious. I was nailed by hail, winds and big time rain as I was loading my boat when I got back in after you called....Elwood was loading in front of me and he was hit by the hail and crap also. Talked to Elwood Saturday night and they had a decent day although they did not get the monster fish he was after....not sure what they did yesterday....he and Cliff were planning on going out yesterday...I cancelled my trip yesterday with the high winds and cold.

Re: Leaving for KY Lake Wed Morning - I'm Back

Hey........We also fished Friday, Saturday and Sunday. We caught a ton of fish, much like you, but had a hard time Friday and Saturday putting together any size.

On Saturday, I broke off a biggun, and missed another........BUT we did manage a 4.5 and a couple over 3.

We were throwing small fish baits , so I guess we got what we were expecting. Actually, I used green, green pumpkin tubes pretty much all weekend..........My fishing buddy tried about every combination OTHER than green........

I'm hoping to go again next weekend...........

On another note............Elwood and Cliff are GREAT......They came down Friday night, after Martinson and I had fished all day..........We talked about lots of stuff, and I will tell you this............Cliff and Elwood are pretty cool guys........

Also Also..........THANKS for the GREAT idea on where to stay.........The lodging was fantastic, and I will be using them again.

MUCH, MUCH THANKS for all the info.

Finally.......Man those storms Saturday were UGLY.........Around 2:00pm, it looked like things were all good, and I ALMOST ran to a couple other spots. I'm glad I didn't. We were in Pisqua, where we launched from, and when the storm pushed in, We were REALLY close to the ramp. Hail, and HIGH WIND don't go together.

BUT, we were OK, put the boat on ramp, and waited it out...............AFTER it blew through, we managed to catch 4-5 other fish.......

Sunday was UGLY HARD............We fished for 4 hours and pulled off the water after 6 short fish, and the biggers black crappie I've ever caught.......We were in Sugar all day Sunday, and some of the bay was BRUTAL to fish, but we tried

    Later,

    Geo

    Later,

    Geo

Water came up like a rocket the past 36 hours...it is now over 358...hope they don't drop the bottom out of it and just leave it up there. Today was a much nicer day than yesterday for sure...lol.

That is likely going to happen...isn't it Dave? How far do you think they will drop it?

I have no idea if they will be dropping it or letting it stay up where it is..forecast on their site says it stays at least for the next day or two.

I checked up river lake levels and Pickwick, Wilson and Guntersville had all been above normal levels from the heavy rains last week....but they seem to have their water back in line with where they should be now in the past 48 hours...of course dumping the water downstream is what backed our water up....the question is now that those lakes are back in line...is the TVA going to pull the water back down here...only time will tell.

Thanks again Dave . I just sucked up some wood into my engine it was restricting flow. It did fine on the way back I was just scared to run it. Hard to beleive a little piece of wood could do it. Part of it was still in it when I got back home. I actually tied the boat off to load and the wind was so bad it broke my rope. I was beginning to think I was doomed before I got home. But we finally made it to the house. I actually live just up from the Lyon County ramp at Mineral Mound. If you ever need anything I can be in the water in minutes just give me a call.
