RPM gauge not working

What would be the most likely cause to stop an RPM gauge from working? It is an 1998 Evinrude 150hp. Thanks for the help.

dont know much bout ur motor i got an 150 xr4 and mine was not working so i replaced the rectifier and it works now only cost me $20 hope this helps if its got one then check to see if ur getting a charge to ur crank battery when ur motor is running if not more than likely ur rectifier let me know if i was ne help hope i was

Check connections under your console. Also check pole position as well. First place to start at.....then work your way back to the motor.
