    new trolling motor help

I bought the new prowler trolling motor at the bass pro sale last month to replace the old motorguide on my bass tracker. The new trolling motor is wired to hook up directly to a 12volt battery but on my tracker, I have the hook up so I went and bought the male plug to hook up. Problem is there is 3 wires on the male plug with only 2 coming off of the motor. What exactly is the 3rd wire for? I'm guessing its grounded on the female side since the old motor just has 2 wires. Every aftermarket plug I have found has the 3 wires.
    PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!

    Re: new trolling motor help

I just hooked up a 24 V motor guide digital to a old 12/24 system. I took a voltage meter and found the two wires I needed. I also asked Stokleys before I hooked it up and they said that I would only need two wires and could get rid of the others. You can get rid of the wire that does not have any juice to it as far as I know. You could probably call your local boat store and they can tell you what you need to do over the phone.

If the plug has a red, black, and orange use the red and black and don't use the orange. The orange is used for 12/24 motors.

In the electric world black and red are hot wires, look at the wiring schemadics, they will trace it out and you will find the black and the red should be hot, It sounds like it will run on 12 or 24 volt.

Not exactly, Black and Red are hot in the AC electric world but not in the DC electric world. Black is negative in the DC world like on a battery. Red is hot.
    Maybe boats are different?

    Re: new trolling motor help

My thoughts are: If you have a 2 battery system, you will have a common ground as one pin, and the other 2 will be the 12 volt of each battery. You may need to run a jumper from the 2 12's in order to use from both batteries, Only a volt meter can tell. In order to have a 24 volt system you would have to have 4 pins at the plug b/c the switching from 12 to 24 takes place inside the foot pedal switches of a motor. Post if you need further help

A little off topic, but do you like the prowler. I too bought it to replace my older Minn Kota, and so far I do not like the motor at all, kinda wish I still had my old one still on. The foot pedal is almost impossible to turn, and I had a 40 lb. thrust that had more power tham this 55. Are you satisfied with yours?
