depth finder question

i have a garmin fishfinder 160 and it was reading 800 feet deep at barren river so i replaced the transducer with a brand new one on the transom and it is still reading false depths. The temp. seems to be right though. Anybody have any suggestions or tips??? Thanks alot

I'm probably wrong on this but I've heard that a bad transducer can fry your unit. Hope not in your case, but you never know. The only other thing is to make sure the transducer is pointing straight down and that the transducer wire isn't crimped or too close to your trolling motor power cable, which I'm sure you already know. Good luck. Good news is you might have an excuse to buy a new one ;-)

How old is this unit? Sounds like a "software issue" to me.....

HOW DO YOU CHECK THE GAIN?? iF IT IS A SOFTWARE PROBLEM, HOW DO YOU GO ABOUT FIXING IT?

What "I" would do (especially if it's a newer unit) is call Garmin and speak to a tech explain it all and see what they say; IF it's a software issue , they should be able to fix that as well...

I know on some Lowrance units they had some software issues with shallow water readings and you just had to download the beta version, put it on your card, insert in unit and turn on... not sure on Garmin units though, (sorry)

Sounds like catfish hole to me. I think them noodler guys dive in holes like that and pull them shovelheaded catfish.
