Grass carp to be stocked in Cedar Creek Lake

Grass carp to be stocked in Cedar Creek Lake

April 13, 2009 Media Contact: John Williams

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (606) 549-1332

Frankfort, Ky. – Cedar Creek Lake in Lincoln County will be stocked April 14 with 842 sterile grass carp to help control aquatic vegetation in the lake.

“We are not trying to eliminate the vegetation in Cedar Creek Lake , but reduce it so it doesn’t get to nuisance levels,” said John Williams, southeastern fishery district biologist for the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. “So, we will conduct a low density stocking of grass carp.”

Thinning the aquatic vegetation in the lake will help improve the condition of the medium-sized bass in Cedar Creek Lake . When there is abundance of weeds in the lake, the small bluegill hide in the vegetation where bass can’t get at them.

“The medium-sized bass are not as heavy as they should be,” Williams said. “The big bass look awesome, but those 12 to 15 inchers are not skinny, but they aren’t great either. Reducing the amount of aquatic vegetation in the lake exposes more bluegill for those bass to eat.”

Anglers may see large grass carp in the shallows in the coming years. These fish are working to improve bass fishing and should be left alone.

I know John and he will do what he thinks is best. He told me the same thing a couple years ago that there were too many small fish and a big gap in size. I hope they dont ruin the fishing and it works out OK.

Fort Knox had two really great Bass lakes on post, Upper and Lower Douglas Lakes, until they decided to stock them with Grass Carp. I used to buy an annual perfmit to fish on post but within two years after they put in the Grass Carp, (I think it was around 2000) I stopped fishing there because the only fish you could catch were dinkis, IF YOU CAUGHT ANYTHING AT ALL. That stocking was done for the same reasons, with the best of intentions, but it really screwed up the Bass fishing and it has not returned yet.

Sio much for our "Trophy Bass Lake"!!

Same thing with Beaver lake, Maybe they will eat all the fish so we can drain the lake and start over again.
