Thanks for sharing the picture, dag gone nice smallmouth...I think fish are tougher than we give them credit for being. We'll never know but I wonder how long that circle hook had been inside of that fish?

Sat. on Dale while fishing live bait, landed this small mouth over 21, what was interesting it had a circle hook passing out the anal, when I removed the hook it had no barb on it. It had dissolved the barb completly, a piece of monofilament the end of a second hook was in the gullet. So mine was the 3rd hook
It weighed over 5.2, I saved the hook but released the fish, its amazing what these fish can tolerate.........Sat. was a rough day for me 4 fish landed w/one over..........I tried to drift in 15-18 ft. water for the most of the day

I caught a 17.5 sm fri.@ c-land had about 2 ft. of line hanging out of his mouth, the hook was in his stomach..
The only good thing about that is the hooks will eventually rust away, provided that the fish don't have difficulty feeding and such, etc. I've caught fish before with hooks and line in their throats, but I left them to rust out. The fish were stilll living with the foreign objects in them, and I didn't want to do more damage to the fish by trying to get a hook out of their gut, potentially doing more damage to the fish and possibly killing them.
I caught a 21incher a couple weeks ago in a tournament a dale and it had a tree line for catfish down its gut and i guess it had broke the branch. Another guy the same day said he also caught one with the green line down its gut. They were hanging everywhere down there.
Nice Smallie! In our ponds it is common practice when a fish swallows the hook to just cut the line as tight as possible to the hook. Of course that is only if the hook is too far gone to work loose without hurting the fish. I have done this in farm ponds and lakes for at least 10 years. In the farm ponds I have caught many fish that are passing the hooks. I have never caught one that did not appear healthy and passing a hook. It is amazing really.
The through the gill trick works wonders on fish that swallow the hook. I used to cut the line at the hook. The gill trick is neat and it's amazing how easy the hook comes out of the throat.
I dont doubt it works, but id have to watch that one done b4 id try it,
as for as catching fish that look like they came off a limb line or trot line, those guys are using live bait instead of cut bait,
