    Re: Best Knot For Fluorocarbon?

I use the palomar knot with P line Fluro. Caught dozens of fish with no break off.

Never broke a carbon on palmoar knot? Never say never. These knot are the worse knot for carbon out there. Whatever suit you.

I use some of the best fluoro made. It will break at some point if you tie a palomar knot. If the knot is not tied exactly right it will cinch down on itself and snap with too much pressure. I would hate to lose a big fish just because it hasn't snapped before. This is not a good knot for fluoro

IMO those insisting on tying the palomar knot are why flouro got such a "bad reputation" for some time. Some knots are just not for some lines.

It's well known now though to use another "good strong knot" with flouro instead, and those of us who do have found the bad rep unjustified ( I'd heard Vanish was "junk" so I bought some to test for myself, tie my own worm harnesses with it and guess what it's Strong when using the correct knots- imagine that). Strong enough I pulled up an anchor with about 85 ft of anchor rope on it (all rope totally soaked as you can understand) not sure how much weight that was but on 14 Lb Vanish I have no doubt it was at least 14 lbs!

That was with a baitcaster spooled entirely with Vanish BTW.

DO what you want, IF you want to not lose big fish with flouro, tie other Good knots is my advise for whatever it's worth.

Eugene Bend.......I mentioned it when I began the thread. The knot was in Bassmaster mag, and Gary Klein said Shaw Grigsby told him to use it with fluorocarbon. I've been using it, but wanted input from anglers on fishin.com about what knots they tie. It also said Gary Klein had never used the knot, so his failure rate could not be recorded.......

I guess it depends on the brand of flouro, but Tackle Tour did a test with Trilene 100% Fluoro and the Palomar out performed the San Diego, Improved Clinch, Uni, and yes even the Trilene knot. It's the knot I use with it and haven't had any problems. I have tried other Fluoros (like Vanish) that was terrible with the Palomar however.

The put 2 knots to the test to see which is better, they test it on Mono, Braid and Carbon. They choose a winner and that knot advances to another round...sort of like a knot tournament. The site has some good info on a bunch of knots and they have videos on how to tie the knot.

The Palomar knot won the 2008 Season contest. However, it was beaten in the final challenge of the 2009 season by the "Fish N Fool" knot...and it works well with carbon. Here's the link to the challenge and how to tie the Fish-N-Fool Knot:

I've had a tough time tying the fishin fool without burning the line. Palomar tied correctly the way Shaw Grigsby recommends is the easiest and no line burn. 98% knot strength.

There's a lot of great info on this thread. Most knots will burn fluoro and not all fluoro is the same is dead on. It is VERY important to set your drag accordingly for low stretch lines and then properly tied knots when using fluoro.

I use 6 lb all the time so I'll know real fast when something isn't right.
