Question Social Bookmarking enabled - help

    I enabled "social bookmarking".

At the bottom of the post you will icon links to Digg, StumbleUpon, and del.icio.us.

Does anybody know anything about that?
    What does it do?
    Is if of any value?
Is anybody sighed up on those sites?

    Thanks
    Peter

    Peter,
This is a new wave of social networking, but I think it's one more thing you need to be embracing right now. In addition to the ones mentioned, twitter and facebook could be also very valuable to Fishin.com.

I'm in the process of learning how we can integrate texting and other cutting edge smart phone utility to enhance our traditional marketing channels. Very powerful stuff especially with almost 60% of the public having web enabled phones.

Thanks for the input. I'll see if I can add Twitter and Facebook.

I turned it on but not really sure and know it takes you to the sites but not really sure how this works in the context of connecting folks and so forth.

Re: Social Bookmarking enabled - help

Those Digg and del.icio.us links can only help to increase traffic to the site.

For example, I'm not a registered user at Digg, but I do have an RSS feed on my home page that shows me the top 10 items that people are "digging" right now. Occasionally, one catches my eye as interesting and I click on the link.

If fishin.com is "dug" by enough people, then those Digg users are likely to come across the site.

I'm not sure that twitter or facebook will help the site too much. Twitter is really hot right now, but you basically would have to have someone send "tweets" on behalf of fishin.com so that your followers would see them. I don't see that working for a message board, but I do think that way, way down the road the message board format will evolve into something tied more closely to social sites like twitter or facebook.

Another aspect you may want to look into is making a mobile version of the site. Something that is stripped down and falls to a URL that is something like: mobile.fishing.com/forums

For a good example of this, check out the CatsPause site. You can view it normally from a computer and get just the text from the mobile version of the site.

This is exactly where I was headed with my post. Web to mobile platform can be done with minimal effort. We are finalizing our product with patents pending and I will be in touch when we are ready to launch.

In lay terms, here's how this could work: Imagine being on the lake and your struggling. You want to see if there are any recent posts for the lake you're fishing. Pull it up on your phone and BAM... instant fishing reports. Post to your Fishin.com friends and share a little info or a photo of a big fish.

This is just one of many applications. A few more could be instant coupons at BPS or the specials from your favorite restaurant. Japan has been doing this for some time now.

I suppose another variation would be a twitter stream on the site in reverse of what I suggested above.

In other words, the site is pulling twitter feeds from all users who want to "tweet" and on Saturday mornings, we could all live vicariously through the twitter feed from various posters describing how they just landed a big one or what they are throwing at the moment, etc.

Call me if you want to explain further. Not sure why twitter in "reverse" would be needed.

I was texting a freind at the lake last weekend (we were both on the same lake) and it was very effetctive quick and easy. Sprint did not have the higher connection for web enabled at CLand but texting did work. I could not understand texting until I had to start using it with my kids.

Sounds like you know something about this. Are you in the business of making web sites phone friendly.

Call me if you have some ideas to share.
