Thinking of going this w/e, anybody got any report on the flow, water temp, how active the smallies are?
Its been way too high to fish for a long time IMO.
I don't know what its gonna be like this weekend, but if it rains another time this week I wouldn't bother going.
ive not heard how the fishing is but the part of elkhorn that runs under the 460 bypass looks to be in good shape. if your going to be in a boat, you should have a good trip unless the coming rains screws it up before the weekend. good luck
I'd be a bit wary of Canoe KY's creek condition "reports." They are, after all, in the business of getting people to come out to the creek.
I agree and do not faithfully rely on those postings, but when looking at the CFS they report, and the CFS from the USGS, more often than not they are in sync. Of course, every once in a while, Canoe KY likes to boost up the levels and CFS more than they like to reduce it since the higher the better for paddling. I think I may have said it on here before, never, but never trust their "fishing reports." This is a creek condition resource only. For instance, today, by the looks of the USGS cfs report, the Elkhorn is humming along at 850+ cfs. Canoe KY reports that this is "a great day for fishing" whereas I would say fishing with that flow would be pretty crappy. Anyhow, nothing beats just jumping in the car and going to see for yourself. Wish I lived closer so I could do that...
Here's another resource that I find to be pretty reliable when it comes to water levels.

So what is a good flow level? I've fished elkhorn last year a bunch during the summer drought and caught fish, but it looks to continue to rise and more rain is forecasted? Basically at what flow level would you consider it unfishable?
Best fishing is when the creek is at what the Canoe Kentucky people call "summer pool." Five inches above or below summer pool can be OK, too. Problem is, the Elkhorn is at summer pool approximately one day per year.
And, that's usually in the Spring or Fall, lol. I really enjoy wading the Elkhorn and find that much easier and more productive with very low flows and no more than 9" above "Summer Pool." Anyhow, Crawdaddys should be emerging this weekend with the May Full Moon.
Creeks are blown out around Lex. We got another inch tonight. Stay off of for several days.
