My wife was recently in an accident and her car was totaled. The other driver was found at fault. We have full overage insurance and nobody was injured. The other driver did not have insurance or a valid driver's license. The other driver went to court and pleaded guilty to driving without insurance. He was ordered to pay about $200 court costs and restitution to KAPS. The restitution was my $500 deductible and he has 6 months to pay interest free. Now, I owe $18000.00 on the vehicle ( 8 months old) and the insurance company will only pay $11,000,00 because I don't have GAP insurance, I am stuck with the $7000 debt. I have had two accidents since 1977 and both times it was with an uninsured motorist. I believe that I spent enough money on car insurance that I could have paid for both accidents 10 times over. I think as long as I have $1000.00 in the bank to cover court costs and the other person's deductible then I should be good to go and bank all the money from not paying car insurance. It could be another retirement fund. What are your thoughts on this?
