    KY River - Boonesboro

Has anyone fished the Kentucky River at Boonesboro? What's in there to catch, besides catfish?

I took the family out for a little drive and we ended up at Boonesboro State Park. The first time I've been there. It looks like there are some decent access points for fishing, once the water recedes. But, is it worth it? I've never fished the Kentucky River at all.

I've heard of people catching sauger there and I know of White bass running there. My friend catches alot of drum on live crayfish.

I've fished that pool and caught some good bass but never really tried at the lock. I've seen alot of people fishing there though. Also, if you like Musky they're in there too. I always seem to hook up with one while bass fishing.

IT's an okay section.. Way too high and muddy now... in about two weeks once the water gets back in the banks you can go up to the dam with a little crankbait or 2-3" white grub and catch just about anything.. If you want to catch fish in the river though I may try a different pool.. I fish a lot below lock #8 and do very good there. I have a friend that fishes all of them and likes lock #6. It takes a boat to get there but you can catch white bass, crappie, sauger till your hearts content..

Lock 8 is just down the River from Boonesboro.
If you follow 27 thru Nicholasville toward Lancaster, cross over the river and go to the top of the hill. 1st road on the left. (Green Roofed log cabin on corner) follow this road back to the bottom of the hill and there will be two boat ramps on your right. The second is usually the better although it can be a bit tricky if the water has been up. (muddy)
Once your there, look at the river and turn right. Make about a 10 min run up to the lock (assuming you have an outboard over 90hp) if Not it may take you a little longer. IT ought to be hot in about 1.5 weeks maybe 2 depending on how much rain we get this week.
PS.. Don't tell everybody about this place there are enough boats up there as it is

Since we are on the subject, if I put in at Boonesboro (I'm directionaly challenged) I can only go one direction right? That will take me past Riptides right? If not which ramp will take you to Riptides on the river, the place to eat?

The dam is just upstream from the ramp at Boonesboro within sight. You can go downstream under the bridge but I dont know where Riptides is.

If you put in at Boonesboro you are in the right pool. The past couple of years thats where I've put in at but I usually never make it past Boone Creek (Riptides is a little further down). Not that long ago there was a decent ramp right next to riptides (if your facing riptides it is under the bridge to the right) but I haven't used that ramp in probably 5 years or so.

If that is the ramp under I75 then homeland security closed it. Not sure if it is the same one or not.
