Those are both great setups, but you can get good setups for way less than that. I throw a big ole berkley crankin stick that I paid around 50 bucks for. It is very sensitive, has a great backbone, and has caught me several 5 pounders with no problem at all. I've got a daiwa reel, not sure the model but it is a round reel (I like the round ones better than than regular or low profile) that I paid 75 bucks for. But if those two are what you are set on I would go for the KVD crankin stick. The Morris is probably just a general set up and for deep crankin you need some serious backbone and sensitivity. You will probably want to go with a 5:1 gear ratio as well. Then spool it up with 10 or 12 pound seaguar and you'll be ready for some deep crankin'

Re: deep crank set up help?

I love Johnny Morris reels, however, for deep cranking, I would go with different reel all togehter. The revo winch was made specifically for deep cranking - larger handles and a smaller profile. I would definitely go with a lower ratio reel, whatever you decide on. But personally, I would go with the winch, and a curado E5 would be my second choice.

For a rod, You can save a bunch. You don't need a super sensitive rod, just one with a good backbone, and slow tip. Glass rods are a good choice, but can be heavy. the BPS crankin stick is a great crankin rod that is easy on the wallet.

Out of the set-ups listed, I would go with the johnny morris reel with the KVD rod.

I second the vote on the BPS Crankin' Stick...a mighty sweet rod for the money...like Col Forbin Said, glass is supposed to be better but as long as you have the backbone with the slow tip you'll be where you need to be. As for the reel, I have no experience what so ever with the reels you mentioned but slow ratio is what you need to get, the slower the better. The rig I have is a Curado on the BPS Crankin' Stick...it's better than milk and honey in my opnion.

I also have the bps crankin stick, its nice. I would consider a carrot sticker if it were me. The kvd rod and real are a nice setup, my buddy has the setup and i've used it, very nice.

Re: deep crank set up help?

i went to bps today and i ended up with a johnny morris reel and a crankin stick. i almost got the quantium energy pt reel for 189.00 but they had the johnny morris on sale for $60.00 cheeper. i think that this set up will do good. the kvd reel didn't feel as smooth as the morris or the energy and the kvd rod felt the same as the crankin stick so i came out saving money with a good set up thanks guys.
