It's always a big male (I know you're not going to check for his sex); he will be a larger than the rest and appears to be braver and more stubborn than the flock. He squawks louder and they seem to follow him. If you can kill him, you will create a commotion with the flock and they will leave for several days.
Catch a time when the tree is full of them, just before dark, and turn loose a load of squirrel shot and kill about a dozen. lol
