Re: What does KY think of Tele-Check?

Hey Mark, dead people have been voting in Ky for years, shouldnt they be allowed to hunt also.. Poaching happens whether which system you use, but also look at it this way, at least the anti hunter group's and non hunting public have to see the dead deer and have something to protest or complain about. I have seen these protests at ck station's, several years ago when Taylorsville allowed open public hunting there was a big protest there, I even had one car pull up beside and cal me a bambi killer and murderer, they saw my little spike in the back of my car, but I politley explained to these people, we were stuck in traffic, that they need to remember that I "shot" this deer, so I do have a gun in my car and also it seems that I know how to use it. They said no more.

Strader is stirring no pot. He is reporting with an objective view of the negative impact on the Deer Population.
Fish and Wildlife is aware of the problems, but fails to make changes due to the impact of the Auto Insurance Industry on Deer Management. No one in the Department really cares about the deer herd any more.
The proof is in the comments shown here.
Dead people, Multiple does on multiple days by people in the same family.

Two types of systems and both have poachers

I understand you're etitled to your opinion.

As far as Jim Strader goes he loves "stirring the pot" and the KY F&G can do nothing right in his eyes.

The call in system can be a little confusing to some. I have heard complaints on how you go about reporting a spike buck.

Re: What does KY think of Tele-Check?

I think that just because the system can be cheated, it doesn't mean it will be. I think it was just as easy to cheat the check stations too. All you have to do is not stop at one. Sure, some people do cheat the current system and some cheated the old system. But then again, some people used to go in and rob banks by flashing 6 shooters around. Now people just use computers to rob banks (see Bullitt County). Was the old way better?

One thing that people have failed to mention is that in Ky, once you shoot a deer, you're supposed to mark on your license that you shot a deer with the date it was done--kind of a paper check station. So if you were to get stopped, they've got something to go off of to see if you've shot one before.

Secondly, Ky lists the names of those who've telechecked deer in on their website. That gives you as as fellow hunter the ability to report known abuses. If someone out there knows for a fact that Granny Smith really didn't shoot the deer that's checked in under her name, they should report it. Otherwise, are they really any better?

Personally, I like telecheck. I like to be able to check them in once I get to the top of the hill and have cell service regardless of the time of day. Where I hunt, I've been seeing more deer each year.

i dont think its confusing at all, a GW told me that if they are above the hair line, it is an antlered deer.

telecheck has its advantages, its a lot easier for the honest hunter, but also a lot easier for the dishonest hunters

He told you wrong it's 4 inches of measured antler. Either four inches on one side or a combination of both sides. A young deer with purtruding antlers above the skin and hair and less than the 4 inch criteria is considered a button buck.

i looked at the guide book and found nothing saying 4 inches of measured antler. it did say that any deer with visible polished antler or velvet covered bone excluding button bucks is considered antlered. the excluding button bucks part i think means the velvet bone under the hair. im not sure if that is correct, so if someone knows for sure, please correct me on this.

It may have changed, this was the rule for many years that I knew of. Maybe I was wrong but I'm almost positive that was at least the old rule. Let's put it this way I seen BUNCHES of button bucks guys use to bring to the check station before telecheck with VISIBLE, TOUCHABLE antlers and since they were very short were tagged as a button buck???? Now granted 90% of those i speak of was barely breaking skin on top to. Interesting now there is reason for doubt. We always try to not shoot real small deer at all, that way you don't run the chance of getting a button when you are trying to harvest your doe. We do the face and ear thing. Look hard at a deers' face and nose length if it has a short nose and small face and head and the ears are short, very young deer. Of course body size is obvious but in some cases where deer stay small even as adults this can be confusing. The ear length and short face is a better gauge.

i seem to remember something about the 4 inch rule, and i think they changed it when they went to the limitless does in a couple of the zones. i like the newer rule as it allows alot of the spikes that under the old way would have been tagged as a doe to have a chance to make it another year or two. i now pay more attention to the deer before i shoot making sure its not a button or a spike buck.

It was changed when we went to four zones and the chance to harvest bonus does. Any polished antler visible above the hairline is considered and antlered deer.
