have one it works as said. but you will end up spending more than you think. some boats take different pucks some have 2 and its real picky about were it goes. but you will see stuff that have never seen before.
I deal with it a lot working at Bass Pro in Clarksville. A lot of guys I work and deal with wouldn't have anything else. I will say that like Boat Bum, you will see a lot of new sights, and it is expensive, but many find it worth it, and come back for another. However, it's primary purpose is for finding structure, or holes for cats, not so much suspended fish like striper. However, it does have a great sonar also for that option.
I haven't used one yet but I figured it would be a great way to find schools of bait and fish. I know it would be hard to tell the depth, but at least you wold know whether to go right or left. You can use the standard sonar for that, however, the way Side Imaging is scanning the bottom, the majority of suspended fish shown will be in a center water collumn readout, but will not show how far to the right or left. If you were to pair up you're sonar and side imaging on split screen, you could be a little more accurate with your estimate of where fish are suspended. It's hard to explain on here, but your more than welcome to come check out our displays and fire some questions at us at Bass Pro. PM me if you need further assistance.
Thanks! Yeah, I know using the side view is difficult for figuring depth. You have to try to visually caculate the length of the shadow and such. Knowing where to go (left or right) seems more what it could be used for, then when you get there check the sonar. I've been studying up on it but I may take you up on the offer and come by for a first hand demo. My fear is I'll end up walk out with one.. I bought one last year and i absolutely love it, especially on lakes i've never been on before. I'm not sure about your boat type, but one mine, if I wanted the side imaging to work while trolling i had to buy an additional "thru-hull" transducer, which i opted not to do as of yet, but it still works great idling along. I don't think you will regret it if you get one. Just my opinion though.
i got one last year and it is the best thing i ever did. it is awsome some of the things you will find is crazy. i have located alot of good fishing spots that i never would have found if i did not have one. i seen a lounge chair one of the old ones with the rubber stripe things in the ohio river you could see it plain as day. if you buy one you wont regreat it.
i have mine mounted on my trolling motor in the front of my boat. and if i want to idle through a area i just leave my trolling motor in the water and it works great like that to. i could talk all day about the things this unit can do well worth the money.
You can see balls of bait fish just used it at cland sunday nite. Then you see the bigger white returns under them but i think that is bigger fish.
the white returns are bigger fish the thing i like is that you can scroll over where you see fish with the aarow curser and mark where they are at on your gps. then you can back off and fish it good knowing there is a fish there. pretty cool
That is what I thought would be very valuable as well and knowing exactly where ledges and such are. I use my GPS with a contour map now, but with the limited accuracy I still have to watch the SONAR to know exactly where it is. I sure wish I could get one right now..![]()
What do you guys have the sensitivity set at??? 0-20? Any other tips on getting more clear images????
