Topwater frogs??????

Yesterday I was fishing Stoner and was having a little luck off a crankbaits and craws but everywhere I went I kept staring at the grass around the banks thinking to myself that there had to be beasts lurking under there. I have never fished a topwater frog but wanted to try it so I had an old frog that had the two big hooks that curled up on the end kind of like the topwater rats. The fourth cast I had a BEAST on 6LB or better but she got off. Ten minutes later I had a solid three pounder on and it spit the frog right back in the boat after a two foot acrobatic leap into the air. I hooked into two more within the hour one of the fish missed and I threw right back into the same spot and it hit again. How do you get a hook into these things?? It was a BLAST but I am not sure if it was they style of frog, old hooks or just bad luck. I would have cought a 16LB sack in an hour if I could have landed those guys. That would have been my best day at Stoner during the hot months by far. What type of frogs do you guys use and hooks?? I am new to the frog thing but hooked now.

Zoom Horny Toad 4/0 or 5/0 Gammy EWG.
Spro Frog is another good one.
I always use 17#-20# Excel and at least a 7ft Rod to take up the slack on the hookset.

I know it's tough with the exciting topwater action, but try to wait a few seconds after the strike to set the hook. Also, sharpening the hooks wouldn't hurt especially being an older bait.

I like the Spro frog and horny toad, but have grown close to the Ribbit frogs. They make some good commotion.

had the same problem, then I started using a short trailer hook. The trailer hook I use is a trilble hook and I cut off two of the three hooks.I guess there are trailers this short but I don't have them and never think to ask for them at the baitshop. Yeah don't pull to quit, let the fish run first.
top water is more fun then eatting BBQ chicken.

after I lost the six pounder I would wait for my line to get tight before setting the hook. I think my biggest problem was not having the right setup. I had 12LB setup on my spinnerbait rod and was throwing in the grass. I will get some big game before I go back and put ut on my flipping rod. I do like the trailer hook idea alot. I started to put one of my spinnerbait trailer hooks on but did not.

65 lb. PowerPro usually does the trick.

You have to give them a couple seconds to inhale it - don't set the hook on the strike, but instead count 1, 2, kapow!

Once they're hooked, you just winch them in and never give them any slack.

I use the SPRO Bronzeeye (not the Jr.) religiously on the grass matts, and it works well...very well! Even the Chain Pickerel like that thing - and they usually scare the heck out of me with their strikes!

i take it ur fishing with on of thoes frogs from wallyworld like th scum frog or the king rat the bodys on them frog are a lot harder than orther kinds take the frog and spread the hooks out aways from each other this will give u a little gap but u will notice more hook ups and like they said wait a few seconds before u set the hook

I have recently bought the tru-tungsten hackney frog hooks and have yet to try with the toadsthey are a double hook method designed for the Horny toads and the ribbits. I rigged one up and it looks pretty neat.

I've been looking at those myself. What size did you buy? I normally fish the horny toads.

Gonna give ya one of my secrets for fishing frogs...Switch to a tube bait with the tentacles on the end. Really don't matter what color, but maybe a white, Red Shad or even Purple will do.... Get a wide Gamma Hook Start it into the tube and before you rotate the hook, put a Styrofoam earplug up into the tube all the way to the end. Then rotate the hook and insert it all the way till it barely breaks the skin or go ahead and break the skin, but then barely bury the tip. This will increase your catch rate tremendously and remember don't use any type of weight, go with fluorocarbon line if possible as well.... Twitch the tube like the frog and hold on.......

This tactic is especially deadly at Patoka Lake, Lake Monroe in Indiana and on Ky. Lake fished over the grass mats......
