Sounds to me like the battery blew up. I had a buddy who had this happen to his car battery. Not for sure what would cause it except that if might have gotten over charged.

I charged up my 2 Inerstate marine RV deep cycle SRM-27 batteries last night; got to the lake and my trolling motor was very weak. I checked the battery connections and noticed that on 1 of the batteries a portion of the side and a portion of the top were broken (like it busted from the inside out) and the 2 top caps were popped off. What do you think would cause this. Thanks.

Yep blew up, had one do this once while fishing, no short,no lose wires, just blew up, come to think of it I think it was an Interstate too. Scared the pee out of me. Thought I'd hit a water mine.lol
Like Earnhardt used to say "blowed up". Maybe on charger too long but can happen with a malfunction inside , that is rare but will happen sometimes.
Well I got nuttin but good news to say bout Interstate batteries..I was finally able to get out on the water for the 1st time over the weekend. My batteries are going on their 4th season and so far seem to be as strong as they were since the day I bought my boat. I keep my on board charger plugged up 27/7 unless the boat is not in the garage.
