I guess its a matter of where I fish and when because I haven't had much trouble with other fishermen lately. Its the cruisers and jet skis that pose the largest hazards and show little respect on the water that I see. But I fish Cumberland, and usually over open water once it gets busy in the summer. The smaller lakes aren't as crowded the few times I fish em each year. I would be all for a mandatory course required for operating a boat. It isn't really covered for a driver's license and a license isn't even required. Yet a "fender bender" on the water can be much more deadly than one in a car.

i don't think you should bite your tongue at all. if someone is doing something inappropriate, tell them right then and there. they could be just ignorant of the situation, but if you don't say anything, it'll just keep happening.

i've only had two incidents at cedar; one was my fault.

when i first got my boat, i was all high and mighty, came roaring into a creek without noticing a couple tied up back in the brush fishing for crappie or gill. never saw them, but washed them pretty bad as i killed the motor once i saw them.

i felt so bad, trolled right over to them and apologized up and down. told them i was completely in the wrong and had no business coming in that creek like that. i could tell the older gentleman was mad.

after going on and fishing when i came back out the creek, this time on trolling motor, i stopped again and apologized for the second time. told him i was a total idiot and that it would not happen again. he smiled and thanked me for my two apologies.

i felt a LOT better, and went on to have a good day. learned a valuable lesson that day and never did that again.

if someone is doing something inappropriate, let them know what they are doing and hopefully they'll not do it again. but if you don't say anything, it'll probably keep happening.

    just my 2 cents.

Everyone here has great points, but the one I think would be the most usefull, is require everyone that operates a boat to have a boating liscence. I think this would at least educate some of these morons, and maybe keep them from killing one of us. When you see a woman in a pontoon pulling her kids on a tube on Rough from bank to bank cutting off numerous boats, including myself, and then flipping everyone off, she odviously does not know what she is doing is wrong, and maybe she would learn, because her kids almost became fish chum. Its really amazing what some people do on the water, and if you just park and watch on a busy weekend, its amazing more people are not killed on Rough and Nolin Lakes.

How close does someone have to be to be considered cutting someone off? For example I was fishing a tournament and on a bank that was probably 300 yards long as I was working down it another boat pulled up at the opposite end and worked towards me. We eventually passed and everything was fine but if you think about it most of the time we were within 100 yards of each other. What if the other boater had come to the bank and pulled up 100 yards in front of me and was going the same direction as I was? Is that cutting me off? The end result is really no different because in either case a lot of the water I was fishing had already been gone over by the other boat. One scenario seems more inconsiderate than the other though.

A month ago I was on Cumberland at night fishing for stripers. I came around and into the mouth of a creek, there was a boat on the far side that I could see because they had a light on as required, then I heard a boat and splashing on the near side where I was but couldn't see anyone as they had no type of light on. I was rather annoyed that I spent time getting to a spot only to find it occupied but that happens. I set the trolling motor on high and headed towards the middle of the mouth of the creek to head further back. I didn't want to use the big motor and disturb the people. Apparently the guys without any lights didn't like that I was going into their creek as I could here them spitting and cussing, then they started casting out into the middle of the creek right at my boat. Of course I was far enough away from them that there was no possible way they could hit me. A few minutes later they got pissed, started their big motor and left out of there.

Right as they left someone else came flying up using their big motor and "headlights". They roared right into the middle of creek, blinded everyone, and went to the spot the first set of guys had just left.

I'm not sure what the point of all this is. I guess there are just many ways what we do can be considered rude and inconsiderate by others. We should all try to be as considerate as possible and remember that we all are just trying to relax and enjoy the fishing.

Thats true but i'd rather just move to another spot then to start a big fight i mean its jus fishin' so theres no need to start a big argument. Yes they should be told that its wrong to do that, and that it shouldn't be done anymore but after that i'll just leave instead of being stubourn and staying in that spot just to make the other person mad. because its not worth it to me.

They are everywhere, had one do it too me Friday night at Cumberland and another same night make me take on a little water because he felt the need to pass me on top of me with his 8 foot water drafting Striper Tub. All that being said though I predict a death on Cedar Creek due to a boat accident in the next few years, mark my words. That lake has too much timber and narrow travel lanes to being WFO all the time. That little lake is a complete Zoo and gets overfished waaaaaaaaay to much by to many people. That lake needs No wake zones badly!!!!

    Mark,
I agree another no wake zone or some sort of restriction because we have almost been hit coming through the trees years ago.

It will take a tragedy to get the attention this place deserves. I still maintain it needs a horsepower restriction. I could give a squat if people with big motors don't like it because there are alot of people with smaller motors who would love it.

You can't fix stupid so there will always be bozo's behind the wheel no matter what is done to the lake.

That is unacceptalbe. My dad taught me that if someone has a spot to fish you stay away and find your own. People have no respect these days!!!

    Good luck,

Well there are just some bad apples making it difficult on the lake and alot of what goes on is unsafe. People getting blocked or cutoff is on any body of water but unrestricted horse power or speed on a small lake is crazy.

The attitude of I'll do what I want because it's my right is part of the problem. It's your right to do what you wish but when it endangers others you just infringed on their rights. I'm not saying you endanger others but many people do on that lake and it needs to get controlled.

Fished tournies at Green for many years and it's totally cool with me to see guys zippin' up the lake because it can handle it. Sure we got cut off but thats just the way it is. Thats where all the Houseboats and jet skiers would run between us and the bank we were fishin....some real winners down there.

I don't think the general purpose of this discussion is about your rights to run up and down the lake IT'S about courtesy and safety.

Nobody is trying to take away your right to run up and down the lake as much as you want but when your rights infringe upon the safety of others then your rights must be restricted.

The initial proposal was a 150hp max on the lake but the tournament fishermen began calling their reps and this limitation was taken off. A 150hp rating in my opinion is also extreme for the size of the body of water.

The reason the lake was built was for creating a quality fishery but what it has turned out to be is a joke. Sure you can catch some decent fish down there if you have nerves of steel and be extra cautious to avoid the idiots who thinks that if there is water then they have the right to it regardless if that specific piece of water already has another angler using it. After almost coming to blows more than once I have removed Cedar Creek from my places to fish. To me it is not worth the headache.
