This is a very interesting subject. I always knew this was based on some upcoming astronomical event, but didn't really know what it was until I did the same Google search, but with the word "astronomy" added. This site here gives a good, understandable explanation of what's going to happen on that date, in astronomical terms:

To sum it up, in that year, the point in the sky where the sun appears to rise on the winter solstice will intersect the "plane of the ecliptic." The site explains what that is better than I could, but it's basically the track of the planets and the Moon. It's the end of a cycle that lasts about 26,000 years, and represents the passing from the Age of Pisces into the Age of Aquarius (cue the Fifth Dimension!). Personally, I don't think there's going to be any great cataclysm, or apocalypse, or whatever word you want to put on it, on that particular date. If you want to get all mystical about it, well then I guess you could say that on that date we will pass into an age during which the world as we know it will end. Given that that age will last another 26,000 years, I don't think it takes a prophet to predict that.
There was one statement made on the website you referenced that I think is pretty far-fetched. In the part about the pole shift, he says, "In 2012 the next polar reversal will take place on earth. This means that the North Pole will be changed into the South Pole. Scientifically this can only be explained by the fact that the earth will start rotating in the opposite direction, together with a huge disaster of unknown proportions."

Give me a break! The Earth's rotations is going so suddenly reverse? Why? It's rotated in the same direction for billions of years. What is going to happen in 2012 that's going to reverse it? Nope, I ain't buyin' it! The Earth's magnetic field is controlled mostly by the Sun. Yes, it's moving, in fact it's position can vary quite a bit day to day. If you're interested, here's a web site devoted to just that subject:

But there's NO evidence that I could find that there's going to be some sudden shift on that day. I'm sorry, but I think that his statement is ridiculous, and if he's going to state hogwash like that as fact, then I would tend to doubt anything he says.
To answer your major question, "How can you reconcile belief in this date as the "end of the world" with Revelations," I don't think you can. I think that belief in this phenomenon, just like any superstition, is inconsistent with a Christian world view. Just one man's opinion.
